What version of SQL 2005 do I need to run on a 64 bit 2003 server

I have a 64 bit 2003 VM setup and I want to install SQL  2005 Enterprise but the only 64 bit version of 2005 enterprise that is the extended version and when I try to install it I am told that it is not compatible with the version of the OS I am using:server 2003, x62, SP2.

1) what version of SQL 2005 Enterprise will work on 2003, x64, SP2?

2) What does the term "extended" mean in the context of an SQL server install?

Thanks,

Chris Schene

Attempting to Install SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1 reports compatibility issue, but no further information found

Upon first run after installing Madcap Flare I am prompted to Install SQL Server Compact 3.5 SP1. However, when I do so a dialog appears reporting a compatibility issue, but no further information is given when I click 'get help online' - well, it just says something like tough cookies man ;-)

How might I go about finding more information about this problem? Has anyone experienced similar problems? Should I ignore the message and install SQL Compact 3.5?

I am running Windows 8 RTM and have installed Visual Studio 2012 + Office 2010 on this PC, but not much else. I get the same warning on a different PC with a similar configuration.

The configuration of the AdminConnection\TCP protocol in the SQL instance SQLEXPRESS is not valid

Hello,

I am getting the following warning in the Application Event Log:

The configuration of the AdminConnection\TCP protocol in the SQL instance SQLEXPRESS is not valid.

The warning is logged by the SQLBrowser service.

This is happening on Windows 2003 server with SQL Server Express 2005. On the same machine SQL Server 2000 is installed.

I am currently unable to connect from remote clients to the instance of SQL Express and I believe it has to do with this warning (I've tried all the usual remote connection troubleshooting without success - enabled protocols, SQL Browser Service running, there is no firewall on the server, I disabled firewall on the client when trying to connect).

Does anyone know how to resolve this issue?

If you need additional information please let me know.

Reporting Service 2008 Installation on a cluster node (2003)

Hi all,

I've read that it isn't possible to set up reporting service for failover, only NLB is possible.

For this topic, I've got 2 questions:
1) Can NLB and failover clustering co-exist on the same server?

2) I've read that it's possible to install reporting service on a cluster node - but without failover / clustering support. The database for Reporting Service was installed in a cluster group. Which type of setup should be choosen for reporting service? "New SQL Server stand-alone installation" or "New SQL Server failover cluster installation" (I can choose "Reporting Service in the "failover cluster installation" tool - I'm confused).

Thank a lot in advantage!

Cumulative Update package 3 for SQL Server 2008 R2

I am trying to update SQL servers with Cumulative Update package 3 for SQL Server 2008 R2.

I have clustered environment (Active/Passive) SQL servers and I followed the following link to perform the update:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958734

However, when I run the command "cluster.exe resource" I get the following results: Note that my active node is SQL-01.

Resource Group Node Status
-------------------- -------------------- --------------- ------
Analysis Services (ERPINSTANCE) SQL Server (ERPINSTANCE) SQL-01 Online
Cluster IP Address Cluster Group SQL-01 Online
Cluster Name Cluster Group SQL-01 Online
DATABASE SQL Server (ERPINSTANCE) SQL-01 Online
FileServer-(SQL-CLUSTER)(D

ATABASE) SQL Server (ERPINSTANCE) SQL-01 Online
QUORUM Cluster Group SQL-01 Online
SQL IP Address 1 (SQL-CLUSTER) SQL Server (ERPINSTANCE) SQL-01 Online
SQL Network Name (SQL-CLUSTER) SQL Server (ERPINSTANCE) SQL-01 Online
SQL Server (ERPINSTANCE) SQL Server (ERPINSTANCE) SQL-01 Online
SQL Server Agent (ERPINSTANCE) SQL Server (ERPINSTANCE) SQL-01 Online

It shows that my current owner is SQL-01. Still when I run the update on the passive node (SQL-02) I can't select anything. If i click "Select All" and try to proceed I get the following error: [Error Message]

There are no SQL Server instances or shared features that can be updated on this computer.

Please let me know if I am missing anything here.

Tks.

An installaton package for the product Microsoft SQL Server Native Client cannot be found. Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package ‘sqlncli.msi’

I used a fresh, new download SQLEXPR.EXE.

What shall I do?

Hi, I'm trying to install Report Builder 3 on my pc. I'm using the msi from the download centre and keep getting a dialog box popping up that contains "1: 0 2:". I click OK and get the standard "Installation Failed" dialog. I have the .NET Framework 4 installed.

I have a logfile if that helps?

Cheers,

Garry

SQL Server 2012 stops running after setup files are copied.

SQL Server 2012 setup stops running after setup files are copied.

I've experiencing the same issue on two different machines. Both are 64 bit running Server 2008.

On both of them I tried installing using the files from the ISO. I initially used winzip to extract the files. The setup was running fine, but the SQL Server engine had an error when it installed. Then using the Add/Remove programs i uninstalled all of the SQL Server 2012 applications, including the setup files.

Now when i try to install using the "New SQL Server stand-alone..." wizard it will copy the setup files and then the wizard never comes back. I've tried mounting the ISO, extracting with winrar, Burning the ISO to a dvd and downloading the 3 files. I also tried mounting ISO of the version that was just recently released. I run into the same issue with all of them.

Thanks for the help.

SQL 2012 - Clustered SQL Server 2012 on Hyper-V 3.0 - RAM Best Practices

$

Hello All!

Would you be so kind to advise what would you suggest for the following settings of the VM which is node of the SQL Server 2012 Cluster.

In our case, we have the following settings

  • VM settings on the Hyper-V:
    Startup RAM: 8 GB
    Minimum RAM: 4 GB
    Maximum RAM: 16 GB
  • SQL Settings:
    Minimum RAM: 4 GB
    Maximum RAM: 16 GB

We found out that if SQL Server Minimum RAM is smaller than Minimum RAM of the VM settings on the Hyper-V then SQL Server 2012 Management Studio crashes when we try opening it after some period of idle time. So we set them equal each other. I have the following questions:

  1. Are there any best practices for setting up the minimum and startup RAM settings in relation to the SQL Server 2012 minimum RAM settings?
  2. Is there any explanation of why crash occurs?

Thanks a lot for you help in advance!

The configuration of the AdminConnection\TCP protocol in the SQL instance XX is not valid.

I have a 2 node SQL Server 2005 cluster with 2 named instances.  Both appear
to be working properly with no issues but I have the following warning
message in the event viewer and I would like to know if it is something I
should be worried about.

Source:  SQL Browser
Type:  Warning
Category: None
User: N/A
Description:  The configuration of the AdminConnection\TCP protocol in the
SQL instance XX is not valid.

The servers in the cluster are running with Windows Server 2003 X64 Enterprise
Edition, SQL 2005 Enterprise Edition SP2 X64.

I have failed the cluster over and I continue to get the message when I
start the instances in the cluster admin, but I don't appear to have any
other symptons.  Client machines can connect without any problem and
transactional replication works no matter what node I bring the instance up
on.

I changed default TCP/IP port and disable/enable Named pipes, but no luck so far.
I see lots of postings about this message but it seems to be related to
SQLExpress and I am not using that here.

Any info would be appreciated.

I've noted this error within the event viewer, however, the instance appears to be running when checking within the SQL Server Configuration Manager (after a reboot which was required for troubleshooting another problem).

Coincidentally BOXIR2 CMS services does not always start-up within the same machine (https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/thread?forumID=291&threadID=1157262).

Environment
SQL Server express runs as a Virtual PC 2007 guest machine.

OS: WinXP Pro SP2

SQL Server 9.0.3042

Attempted resolutions and assumptions
I've searched regarding the problem online, however, found nothing indicative so far:
http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/showpost.aspx?postid=281136&siteid=1 - similar problem
http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2004/07/23/192044.aspx - troubleshooting using command line; where I could connect successfully to the instance (JOEY).

I haven't updated SP3 due to disk space restrictions; however having read the overview, no upgrades are applicable for SQL Server 2005.

At the moment I can connect successfully from Visual Studio from another machine on the network, hence, I presume connection is fine.

Any help on troubleshooting the error would be appreciated.

Invalid initial SQLEXPRESS configuration

I was getting "The configuration of the AdminConnection\TCP protocol in the SQL instance SQLEXPRESS is not valid." warning in the event viewer every boot.
I found the solution in Straight No Chaser's post from Friday, March 09, 2007 7:47 PM here.
So, one should just change
"TcpDynamicPorts" in
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQLServer\SuperSocketNetLib\AdminConnection\Tcp]
from 0 to, say 1433.

So, this looks like a very long-standing problem.

My question is - why default value is 0? It can not be valid, could it?
Shouldn't there be a patch to troubleshoot the issue?
