Setting of page file (virtual memory) for sql server

S

I have a sql server 2008 instance installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise.

This server is dedicated to sql server. I have set max_server_memory to 24GB, so 8GB is still available for other things.

Page file parameter (virtual parameter) is set to a default of 4GB. Should page file be changed to 1.5 *32GB.

Since only sql server is running, do we really need such large virtual memory (1.5 *32)!! Appreciate you expert advice.

SQL 2012 - Windows 7 64-bit - Parallels Desktop 8 - MacBook Pro Retina

Hi there,

is anyone of you running the following system configurations:

MacBook Pro Retina OS X 10.8

Windows 7 with Parallels Desktop 8

SQL 2012 or SQL 2008R2

I tried out everything, but it won't work...

The installation of the SQL 2008R2 failed because of missing perflib-files and values. The threads i found, haven't been helpfully yet.

The installation of the SQL 2012 failed because of missing ...-install-postmsi-cpu64-...-files.

Parallels said, that this would be a Mircosoft-problem, Mircosoft says, that it would be a Parallels-problem.

I just want to know, if someone else has got this thing running, specially SQL 2012, without finally changing to bootcamp -> that's not the way I wanted to go...

Thank you so much!

"Prior Visual Studio 2010 Instance Requiring Update" Failed

Hi,

I'm trying to install BIDS and SSMS for SQL Server 2012 on my machine. However, I can't get passed validation step that indicates SP1 needs to be installed for Visual Studio 2010. However, I have installed an re-installed VS2010 SP1 already.

Has anyone had the same problem?

SQl Server 2008 R2 Express SP1 instance un-installation is failed after upgrading SQL Server from SP1 to SP2.

Hi,

The above header refers.

I created SQL Server "User Instance" in "SQL Server 2008 R2 Express SP1" from "InstallShield Package". After creating instance successfully in "SQL Server 2008 R2 Express SP1", I upgraded SQL Server 2008R2 from SP1 to SP2 manually and checked working fine.

Now I am trying to Un-Install "User Instance" (which is created in "SQL Server 2008 R2 Express SP1”) from "InstallShield Package", Un-Installation of User Instance process is freeze (endless loop).

Below scenarios no issues:-

1. If I am not upgraded from "ServicePack 1" to "ServicePack 2", there is no issue.

2. If I try to un-install from "Command prompt" also no issue.

3. There are no issues with lower express editions like “SQL Server 2005, SQL Server 2008”.

So any help that you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Reddappa

SQL 2012 Best Practices Documentation

been looking around through sql 2012 books online, blogs, technet forums & a couple of SQL 2012 books, but cant find this information.

Basically after a best practices around layout/architecture/installation of SQL with Reporting Services and Analysis Services & Data Warehousing.

I wanted to see things like:

  • recommended processor/memory configurations for SQL and also for features like Reporting/Analysis/Warehouse
  • storage recommedations
  • recommendations on whether to co-locate services like Reporting/Analysis/Warehouse on the same server as production DBs and when not to

I've been burrowing into an Exchange 2010 installation and all of this kind of stuff is wonderfully well documented (obviously in part because it's a much older product)

anyone can point me to any of this stuff?

Check for SQL Server Management Studio Version

Hey Guys

I need some help. I am doing a silent install of SQL Server 2008 R2 Express Edition with Tools but it wont install with SQL Management Studio 2005 Express on the computer.

I am looking for an easy, reliable way to tell which version of SSMS is currently installed on the machine. I am using NSIS to launch the install and I am hoping there is some flag I can use to :

  • Get Version information (ie 2005,2008)
  • Get Uninstaller (so I can Uninstall it if its the 2005 version)

Thanks

SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 CU1 Fails with Version Number Incremented (Error -2058354685)

Can someone help me with error -2058354685 on the install of 2008 R2 SP2 CU1?  I've read the other posts, but I don't seem to have the same issues.  When I look at the detail log, I don't see the errors reported by others.  The message I see in the detail log is:

The patch seems to have installed, but I'm not feeling good about moving forward with this failure.  Here's my version info.  As you can see the patch has installed.

Excel Download Not working in Server

I am doing reports that are created from a database that sits on a Server 2008 R2 box, hosted via IIS.

I am doing reports on a small scale and some reports export to an Excel sheet fine when I export about 200 records. If I try to export around 1000, windows asks if I want to Open or Save the .Xls. What ever option I select I displays the default windows box, displaying Estimated time left and Download to , but 5/10 minutes later it just displays 'Internet Explorer Cannot Download'??

I have made sure that the ASP script timeout set to a sensible time, and the .XLS is set in on the MIME Types. Not sure what else it could be? As I said it does it fine with a small amount of records selected to an excel sheet from the server but just not a large set of data.

Install SQL Server 2012 on SSD + HDD

I'm planning to install SQL Server 2012 on a pc configuration with SSD and HDD, but I'm wondering which is the best set up?

1. Put everything on the SSD - Shared components + Instance Root + Data folders

2. Put everything on the HDD

3. Put Shared components  + Instance's Root on the SSD and Data folders on the HDD, to minimize the writes

Any idea or advice is appreciated.

MSDTC issues between Windows 7 32-bit and XP SP3 32-bit

Hi all,

I'm having an issue trying to get MSDTC to work between a Win 7 32-bit PC running SQL Server 2008 and a Win XP 32-bit PC running SQL Server 2005.  If I try to complete a distributed transaction, I get this error:

"The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "<BlisterMachineComputerName>" was unable to begin a distributed transaction."

I've also tried to use the DTCPing tool to see if I can troubleshoot the problem further.  Using this blog as a guide: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/distributedservices/archive/2008/11/12/troubleshooting-msdtc-issues-with-the-dtcping-tool.aspx

When running DTCPing from the Windows 7 Machine, I get the following log:

1) Verify that both PCs can resolve the other's name.2) Verify that MSDTC security is setup correctly on both computers.  On the Windows 7 box, Network DTC Access is checked, Allow Remote Clients and Allow Remote Administration are checked, Allow Inbound and Allow Outbound are checked, No Authentication Required is checked, and Enable XA Transactions and Enable SNA LU 6.2 Transactions are checked.  The DTC Logon account is NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService.  On the Win XP machine, Network DTC Access is checked, Allow Remote Clients and Allow Remote Administration are checked, Allow Inbound and Allow Outbound are checked, No Authentication Required is checked, Enable TIP Transactions is checked, and Enable XA Transactions is checked.  The DTC Logon account is NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService.

3) I've turned the firewall off on both machines.

4) I've added two registry entries on both PCs and rebooted them both. (RestrictRemoteClients = 0, and EnableAuthEpResolution = 1; both in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\RPC)

If anyone can help me resolve this issue I would appreciate it.  I've been pulling my hair out for 2 days now...

Thanks in advance,

Do SQL 2012 installations take longer as the number of existing instances increases?

$

We have a 4-server SQL Server cluster with a multitude of instances that are already up and running (24 instances of mixed versions of SQL).  We have noticed that the installations take much longer to go through the install process as the number of instances have increased.  Each step in the "Install a SQL Server Failover Cluster" setup process takes between 10 minutes to over an hour to get to the next step, so it ends up taking a full work day to go through a single failover instance installation at this point.  Has anyone else experienced this?
