How to setup a new SQL Server instance as part of my software installation?

Hello everyone.  I realize this is a broad question, but I have been reading a TON online and I am still completely lost.  I don't understand this one bit.  So I figured I really had no choice but to ask on here.

I have a program that uses a SQL Server database.  Presently I am using SQL Server 2000 because another preexisting program on the network does and 2000 was already setup.

But, I would like to move my program to SQL Server 2008 but I have no idea how to install whatever is necessary for SQL Server, or how to setup the database, or upgrade the database or server.  And I'm terrified that I will do something that will mess up the 2000 database or server that the other program uses (Which is a critical application).

So, I'm really quite terrified and felt I had no choice but to ask on here.  I'm really hoping someone can help me understand what I need to do and how I need to handle this.  I'd like to be able to upgrade this and handle a fresh install as well because we'll be switching servers in about a year so I'll have to do that as well.

Thank you so very much for any help.  It is GREATLY appreciated...

SQL Locking a Service Account in Different Domain

$

Hi,

We have a one-way trust between two domains, say A and B.  B trusts A.  Both domains have SQL Servers and both have services accounts from their own domain.  The service accounts have the same name and different passwords.  (In the old days this was a bad idea, but it worked if the passwords in each domain are the same.  But this is not the old days, but perhaps it's still a bad idea?)

Anyway, using my domain A desktop and domain A user account, I can connect using SSMS to the SQL Server in domain B.  DDL and DML works as expected.  However, if I try to use sp_database_mail with a query, it fails with parameter error of some sort.  I normally suspect permissions when I see this.  I'm a sysadmin, so I was a little surprised.

If I create a job to run the procedure that uses sp_database_mail, it works fine.  About this time we started having issues with domain A production machines.  It turned out that my testing in domain B locked the domain A service account.  I find it odd that a server in domain B that has no domain A service accounts would try to use a domain A account of the same name.  The domain B account would have worked.

I think I'm in a different forest.  I see NTLM rather than Kerberos being used.

Is our environment not configured correctly?  Use a proxy account even if it is the same as the SQL Service account?  Change the service account names in domain B?

Thanks

Need complete, detailed instructions on how to remove/uninstall SQL Server 2008 and R2

$

There are thousands of forum posts related to uninstalling SQL Server that provide varied information.  Most refer to the BOL article http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143412.aspx, which is useless in most error situations.  Can anyone provide true, complete instructions for removing all SQL Server components from a machine?  I'm not sure why there isn't a robust MS-provided utility for this, but I'll be relieved just to have a manual method.  I understand that there will be registry hacks, security group mods, folder deletions/renames from god knows how many places, and probably a cauldron of frog legs and shaken babies.  Just please don't make me cruise these endless seas of bogus forum posts any longer.  I am thirsty and seasick.

Thank you,

-Peter

SQL Server 2008 R2 (I think some of my old SQL 2008 "plain" install may still reside as well) Developer Edition - All components

Yes, I have VS 2010, which prbly caused the SQLExpress BS to hork my origh install in the first place.  I yearn for the day when VS and SQL teams kiss and make up.

Created accounts in Active Directoy with AD-PowerShell, does the SQL account need special permissions?

I don't really know if I have to post it here or in the PowerShell forum, so I try here first.

I've just created a few accounts on a new machine with it's own domain. It's a Win 2008 R2 machine.

I'm trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 on that machine and I'm stuck with the error message:

The Credentials you provided for the SQL Server Agent Service are invalid. To continue, provied a valid account and password for the SQL Server Agent service.

I just wanted to ask, if that account I use for the SQL Server, needs some special permissions like  SQL permissions or something. The account does not have admin rights, does it need admin rights?

I'm actually quite sure, that I typed account name and pw correct.

Uninstalling Reporting Services 2005 instance

$

Hi,

I'm trying to uninstall an old instance of SQL 2005 Reporting Services (x86) on a WS2008 vm but for some reason the uninstall crashes.

I am using programs and features to uninstall the SQL 2005 Reporting Services named instance. I get a message saying 'setup is preparing to make the requested configuration changes' and the setup then closes without any warning or error message.

Has anyone else had similar problems and does anyone have any ideas how to remove this instance of RS? If it's any help the corresponding SQL instance has been uninstalled so maybe thats confusing the setup program?

Many Thanks,

Phil

Error Connecting to Named Instance

$

I had to install a new instance of SQL Server 2008 R2 Express on Windows 2007 because our SQL Server 2008 R2 Trial version ended (It's just a development machine). I was able to connect to the Express version using SSMS using the machine name\instance name but couldn't connect using the web config from our web service (error establishing connection to SQL Server - error 40). Everything is local. I did read that you if you have a named instance, it connects with dynamic ports but I wasn't sure if this was true when everything is local but I did try changing the port to a fixed one (added it to the connection string) and opened the windows firewall but it still didn't work. So I then changed the port to the default port of 1433 and it did work. So three questions: 1) does that mean I didn't open the firewall correctly when I had another port (I used 1435, which didn't seem to be in use by other program)? 2) In using 1433, it complained that the database name was incorrect and it mentioned the old database name that we used to call that database. So I changed our current database name to that old name and all worked fine. Not sure why/how it found/used that old name? 3) Any issue leaving it as the default port at 1433 when it is a named instance? Does it matter? Thank you!

Dear all,

My SQL Server 2012 instance (MSSQLSERVER) refuses to start automatically whenever my server is restarted.  I have already made sure that the Start Mode is Automatic in the SQL Server Configuration Manager.

I would appreciate any pointers to fix/troubleshoot this problem.

Many thanks in advance.

Best regards,

SQLPath element is missing error- when upgrading SQL Server 2008 to 2012

Hi,

I upgraded SQL Server 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012. Upgrade failed with few errors. I run repair and few of those errors got fixed but there are two that I cannot get fixed.

The OS is Windows 7 ultimate (64 bit). I did in place upgrade and as result of an update I lost SSRS. I can see that a new directory for SSRS was created and all the files seem be in place but the services does not start and it points still to the old directory (where there is no service binary).

During an upgrade I get 2 errors: "SQL Path element is missing" and "The name has already been shared". And the features that failed are: Reporting Services and LocalDB

SQL Server 2012 Error

SQL Server Management Studio fails to load with the error message "Microsoft Visual Studio Isolated Shell Environment." "Cannot find one or more components.  Please reinstall the application."

This started happening after I tried to install the "Beta" of Visual Studio 11.  That installation failed during install.  I have removed all of the artifacts that I can find from that installation and I have completely removed SQL Server 2012 and reinstalled multiple times in different ways.  All other features seem to work.

Any idea's on which file I messed up by trying to install the beta?
