Hi

I'm trying to install powerpivot with sharepoint integration mode on a server using sql server 2012 installation wizard.

I type in a domain user name and password and I get the error message :

The credentials you provided for analysis services service are invalid. To continue, provide a valid account and password for analysis services service.

Error result: -2068578304
Result facility code: 1204

Any ideas on how to get around this problem?

I changed my password to s a strong type password. It made no difference.

The server is a domain member server.

Failed SQL 2008 R2 Install on Windows 7 - seSecurityPrivilege

I've been attempting to install SQL 08 R2 on my machine for a couple days now without any success.  I keep running into this error:

The process does not possess the 'SeSecurityPrivilege' privilege which is required for this operation

I've researched all over the net on articles as far back as 2000 on this problem and understand how I am supposed to be able to enable this privilege in the Local Security Policy, but their are two problems:

1) I am part of the 'Domain Admins' group in our domain which is already assigned to the 'Manage auditing and security log' policy, so my account should already have the required security.

2) Even if I wanted to change the setup of that policy I can't because the Add/Remove buttons are disabled.

Also, when viewing the accounts with the 'Manage auditing and security log' policy there is a note stating that 'This setting is not compatible with computers running Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 or earlier.  I assume this is why the ability to edit it is disabled, but this is a Windows 7 box and our Domain Controllers are running with Windows Server 2003 compatibility (saw mention in some article it could be related to DC versions) so I'm not sure why the note is even there.

I've run the SQL 2008 R2 installer as myself and as Administrator with the same results.  I've ensured that I am included in all 3 required security policies; seBackupPrivilege, seDebugPrivilege and seSecurityPrivilege.  These are documented in this KB article (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000257/en-us).  In that article it refers to confirming your security privileges with the 'AccessChk' tool they link to, and I was not able to get that to work either.

This is a brand new install of Windows 7 Ultimate on a computer that was wiped clean this week (brand new hard drive).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  I just completed my 4th failed SQL install attempt (install, uninstall, delete folders, reboot, repeat :)).

SQL 2008 SP1 to SQL 2008 R2 Upgrade

I have a SQL server running SQL 2008 SP1 and am trying to upgrade to SQL 2008 R2.  The server has an installation of SCOM 2007 R2 with CU4 on it with reporting services and SCOM data warehouse

The SQL upgrade advisor runs and tells me that Custom report items were detected on the report server and 3x Custom extensions or assemblies were detected on the report server

If I actually try to run the upgrade I get a 2 failures in the Upgrade Rules check:

No Custom Security Extensions and No Custom Authentication Extensions

I can see that the file rsreportserver.config has the custom entries relating to the scom data warehouse user so it is possible to change this file back to the original config file that was present before installing scom data warehouse and then run the sql upgrade and then put the config file back?

Lost in the forest--sqlserver

I have multiple questions regarding sqlserver.  This will probably get me a reprimand for violating the rules, but I would appreciate someone's overview of where I've been and where I am going. Here goes:

I've been developing in ASP.NET/VB for about a year on a Vista machine using Visual Web Developer Express.  I am now using a trial of VS2010 which will expire in a short time and I still have not got a final confirmation that I can deploy my applications to my hosted server.  Most of my time has been spent in determining how to install one version of this and that and then reinstall and hope for better results.  My database application is really the only thing that is keeping me from moving ahead.  My host tells me that I need to convert the server 2008 database to a 2008 R2 format to run the application.

Here come the questions.

1.  I was told by my host to simply run sqlserver management console to run the conversion.  I acquired this animal to no avail.  Whatever I tried, I was told to try something else.

2.  I got a very respectable answer the other day that told me that all I need to do to convert from 2008 to 2008R2 is to do a backup of 2008 and a restore to a 2008R2 instance.  The only question raised by this easy-to-understand process is what must I do to do a backup.  I have been programming for a long time and always understood backup to mean a simple process of copying a file for safekeeping.  Not so here!  It seems that I would have to read for a very long time to understand how to go about in this environment.  I saw no option to do this backup within the sqlserver2008 software.  I suspect that I need to run setup again to obtain that option.  Since I installed server 2008 myself, I do not understand why the proper setup option was not given me.  Nonetheless, my first question is merely a confirmation that this is what I need to do to obtain a backup capability.

3.  Assuming that I have the backup capability, what is the next stumbling block? Will a 2008R2 instance be required in order to do the restore?  I do not have a 2008 R2 instance so how will I do the restore?  Do I need to be running ss2008R2?  If so, then that leads me to the next question.

4.  If I was running  2008R2 server, then I presume I would not need to do any kind of conversion, backup/restore and I would be ready to deploy the application and the database, correct?  The only question this raises is whether a sqlserver2008R2 is compatible with VS2010 which is what I am running now.

I hope these questions are easy for a knowledgeable respondee.  Thanks anyone.

Single Raid10 volume for TempDb -- Still advised multiple files?

$

Just a quick question...when my TempDB for both of my SQL 2012 instances are on a single Raid 10 volume, am I correct in following all the guides about still adding additional NDF files to the tempDB for each instance?

Does one still gain the performance gains especially with Pagelatch wait type 2:1:3 (what we're currently seeing with 1 file) when all of the MDF/NDF/LDF files for the tempdb are on a single Raid10 volume?

Or should I look to split the Raid10 Volume into two Raid1 volumes and seperate the MDF/NDF files from the LDF files

Drive config is as follows..

OS: Raid1 /  15k SAS drives

DB: Raid 5 /  15k SAS drives

Logs: Raid 10 / 15k SAS drives

TempDB: Raid 10 / 15k SAS drives

Hi,

I am currently trying to install sql server 2012 on my computer, but the data tools - Basic and the data tools - complete are failing completely at the end of setup.

The error has said that "one of the dependencies has failed" but every other package has installed perfectly, and therefore cannot see the dependency.

I do microsoft sql server 2008 installed, but ssms was still showing error even before that.

I have Windows 7 operating system and Visual Studio 2012.

Safe to delete SQl Server 2008 Setup Support Files

I've run into a bit of a disk space problem so need to uninstall some unnecessary programs.  Does "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup Support Files" fall into this category? Are these files needed to suport Setup (e.g. installation) of SQL Server 2008 on a particular machine?

What would be the effect of uninstalling them?

Help Upgrading SQL Server 2008 R2 from Evaluation to Standard

$

My name is Bill.  Here is my story....

In April I was installing SQL Server 2008 R2 on my server at work.  I was upgrading from SQL Server 2008 R2 Exress, which I had outgrown.  I wanted to prove out some of the benefits I would get for my boss so I installed the Evaluation version.  During the installation the IT guy working with me had put the media in the server and I did the install.  It has worked wonderfully.  I have known the evaluation was coming to an end, but I also knew that the upgrade process was simple, so I have not worried about it.  During my install I saw that the product key filled in automatically, I guess from the media, but I changed it to evaluation since I had not paid for it yet.

So, now I am running out of time.  I purchased the required license, actually a 2012 license, for which I have a certificate, but I don't have an activation key.  Nobody at work can find the installation media.  I need an activation key, I believe, to select the version of SQL Server I want to switch the evaluation version into.  Where do I find an activation key?  I've just shelled out a few thousand bucks for this thing and I don't want it to stop running on me.

Thanks!

Bill

RC0: RS Installation Problem - The credentials you provided for Reporting Services service are invalid. To continue ...

Hi

When installing 2008 RC0 I get the following error message:

"The credentials you provided for Reporting Services service are invalid. To continue, provide a valid account and password for the Reporting Services service.

Error code: 0x84B40000"

During the installation process it never prompted for the credentials to be used for the Reporting Services service (i.e. the Reporting Services service did not appear under the "Service Accounts" tab during the Server Configuration stage of the installation. The other services did appear). In the "Ready to Install" stage the Account under Reporting Services, Service Configuration is given as "udefined". Everything else installed without a problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

SQL Server Management Studio Upgrade from 2005 to 2008

We are in the process of upgrading to SQL Server 2008, which means I will eventually have users that will need to upgrade from SQL Server Managememt Studio (SSMS) 2005 to SSMS 2005 to 2008. I have not been able to find any good advice on how to upgrade only the Management Studio.  Can anyone recommend a good site, kb article, etc... that deals with this?

When I upgraded my client utilities (2005 to 2008) I had to basically go through the full install process just to pull MSMS out unless I wanted the Express version.  In the past we have offered our users the full blown version of SSMS (2000 and 2005) and depended on permissions to disallow use of management objects.  I have some users that will be able to utilize the 2008 Express version of SSMS but I will also need a plan for developers who work with and manage SSAS, SSRS, and SSIS and will need to upgrade to the NON-express version.  How do I make available to them an upgrade that does not require product key information?
