Hardware requirements for SQL Server for Sharepoint

Hi!

We are setting up a Sharepoint server in our production environment and one in our test environment. The people installing the sharepoint servers recommend that we have a dedicated SQL server in production and an dedicated instance in test. I can understand the reason for a separate instance since sharepoint creates a lot of databases and for security but is it really necessary to have a dedicated server in production? We currently have a license that we can add 4 cores to our production server to a total of 8 cores. These 4 cores is what is recomended for the dedicated production server.

I can see the arguments about lesser disk IO, better performance and "Best practices" for the dedicated server, but I feel that a separate instance will give almost the same IO and performance as a separate server.

Anyone having recommendations for this setup?

Change editions - from Enterprise to Eval

Doing some pre-production testing with SQL2012. I inadvertently installed a lot of systems using our MSDN key (instead of Evaluation). I am testing very large machines with many cpus. Unfortunately for our MSDN key, it limits us to 20 logical processors used because of 2012 licensing changes to enterprise edition, which limits me on my test scenarios (similar to the link below).

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sql_shep/archive/2012/06/21/sql-server-2012-license-core-limitaion.aspx

This limitation doesn't exist for the evaluation....I get all the logical processors on the system. I would really like to change my installs all to "evaluation" instead of using our msdn key.  All of the articles out there indicate how to go the other direction (from evaluation to a key). I want to go from a key to evaluation.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

Cannot access a database in SQL Server 2012 VM

I have installed MS SQL Server 2012 into a Windows 2008 R2 64bit VMware VM and created a new database called "Pensions" by exporting, then importing it from my local PC's MS SQL Server 2008 database. I can connect to the VM's SQL Pensions database using the MS Management Studio (2008 on my PC), but when I use MS Excel (for example), I can only see the "master", "msdb" and "tempdb" databases (which are under "System Databases", but "Pensions" is not).

So far, I have followed the instructions in http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/2102.how-to-troubleshoot-connecting-to-the-sql-server-database-engine.aspx and have opened ports 135, 1433, 1434 and 49182 (the latter allowed TCP connection, the others did nothing noticeable) on the firewall of the VM's Server. The SQL Server 2012 connection settings allow for remote connections. Not sure what else to do to enable me to "see" the "Pensions" database.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Walter

Data Replication

Hi everyone!

I'm really new to SQL Database (in fact I'm new to Databases), so be kind and help me with some suggestions for the following Scenario:

I have a SQL Database Server, and 20 front-end clients that access the database via ODBC.

Problem is that for network and location reasons, i need to have the Database in two locations: 10 users access the first location (INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE) and 10 others do the same in the second location...

But a change made in location 1 has to be visible in location 2, and vice-versa. Do I need Replication ? Any constraints to primary key fields ? I don't have any idea, so any suggestion will help :)

I keep having the file is corrupt when extracting.  I download it many times from MSDN without luck.  I just reimage my system with minimum.  Please help.

System:

Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit

Visual Studio 2008

SQL Server 2005.

SSMS not seeing all instances on SQL 2008

From my Windows 2003 Server running SQL 2005 using SSMS I try to connect to my Windows 2008 Server running SQL 2008 I can see the main instance MySQLServer but I have two additional instances running server10/test1 server10/production

When I run SSMS on the 2008 Server I can see all the instances.

I have a Web Server on Windows 2003 server that uses a connect.db command and all my asp code uses that connect to point to the sql server.

I moved the data base from SQL 2005 to the SQL 2008 server.

But now noone can access the data from the web site.

I think If I can see the server10/production instance on SSMS from the same server that is running the web site Ithe data will start to be seen.

Any ideas on why I can not see the other instances from another computer?

Any command line test from a workstation or server I can run to test this?

Thanks

OS System Update is Preventing SQL Server 2008 R2 from starting!

On 9/22/12 I isntalled the following Windows updates:

KB2719857,
KB2741355, and
KB2735855.

All for WIndow 7 for x64 based Systems.

Since that time I have not been able to start SQL Server R2. More specifically, when I try to start the SQL Server R2 service this is the error that occures:

The SQL Server (server name) service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or program.

I am a .Net Developer NOT an SQL Server Expert, so if you want me to check logs, it would be a good idea to provide more info like where and how to view the logs.

Cannot find MS SQL Server Database Engine

We recently started MSSQLServer on one of out servers, it has been installed but not running and we were instead running SQL Express. We needed to use the Job agent so we have switched over to running MS SQL Server. I cannot however connect to the MS datebase engine, to run jobs from the Agent. I am not sure what I have to do to connect. or if this is an installation error everything seems to be installed correctly:

But when I go to log into the SQL Management studio the only registered Server, database engine listed under the Local Server Groups is the Stopped SQLExpress, and I cannot access the Agent with it.

I am wondering how to connect to the MSSQLSERVER database engine?

Is the express version causing problems with the database enging?

Unattended Setup - SQL 2008 R2 - ASSVCACCOUNT="NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM"

I am trying to get SQL 2008 R2 installed using both the Command line and Config.ini file setup options.

I want to do a fairly standard install, I only want the services to use the Local SYSTEM account.

The credentials you provided for the Analysis Services service are invalid. To continue, provide a valid account and password for the Analysis Services service.

I assume this is failing because I'm not specifying ASSVCPASSWORD option What am I suppose to enter when the account is the built-in SYSTEM account.

Any help will be appreciated.

thanks

Problem upgrading SharePoint Services 3.0 SQL Server 2005 Express to 2008 R2 Express

Hello everybody,

at a customer's site there a SharePoint Services 3.0 box with SQL Server 2005 Express. Because the databases grow and grow, we decided to upgrade to 2008 R2 Express with the following plan:

1) Ensure SharePoint Service Pack 3 is installed and Microsoft Update does not have anything new.

2) Stop SharePoint Services.

3) Upgrade to SQL Server 2008 R2

4) Install all available Updates.

However, after 3) we still talked to a SQL Server 2005 instance (as SELECT @@VERSION returned). We upgraded the OFFICESERVERS instance again (it said it was successful), but still the active service is running SQL 2005.

Our findings was that there was indeed a folder for 2008 R2 OFFICESERVERS with a new version of sqlserver.exe, but the service instance is still pointing to the folder and executable of SQL 2005.

Is this a known problem? Can we just point the services to the 2008 R2 executables in HKLM/CurrentControlSet/Services to fix it?

SQL Server Error 26

Here is my issue.

I have a 2005 express server installed on one PC and I need another PC to connect to it.

I have Named Pipes and TCP/IP enabled.  I have SQL Browser service running.  I have enabled remote connections.  I have completely turned of the Firewall for the time being.

I was also able to have the server on the PC that currently cannot connect and have the other PC connect. I would leave it that way but that is not an option in this case.

When I open Management Studio and browse for more servers; it does find it under the Network Servers tab.  When i attempt to log in i get the Error 26 message.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Dear Support,

When attempting to install WSUS on Server 2008 R2 SP1 I receive the following error:

2012-01-04 18:01:53  Error     MWUSSetup          The process ocsetup "WSSEE" /quiet /norestart returned error: 0x643 (Error 0x80070643: Fatal error during installation.)

2012-01-04 18:01:53  Error     MWUSSetup          CSetupDriver::LaunchSetup: Setup failed (Error 0x80070643: Fatal error during installation.)

IIS installs OK, but the problem appears to be related to installing Windows Internal Database rather than WSUS itself.

WSUS was installed previously on the server. The WSUS role and Windows Internal Database Feature are both unticked in Server Manager.

Running: msiexec /x {BDD79957-5801-4A2D-B09E-852E7FA64D01} callerid=ocsetup.exe I receive the message "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed".

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have already started a discussion in the WSUS forum here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverwsus/thread/a15b9040-e6b0-480b-8c9c-1d9f6be1d866/#fd7baf72-96f0-49ff-8255-15b813ba62c4 however the problem is the Windows Internal Database is failing to install which is why WSUS will not install.

SQL Server 2008R2 Migration

$

I will be migrating over a SQL Server to 2008R2. I have the server built and the roles installed. I even have SQL2008R2 installed on it and have successfully moved over a test database. The biggest question involves the SSL certificate that is on the server. Please let me know of any holes that you see in my plan below.

1. Detach all tables in the currently operating server

2. Copy those tables over to the new server

3. Attach the tables

4. Bring down the old server

5. Rename the new server to the same name as the old

6. Change the IP address to the same as the old server

7. Attach to the databases and verify their existence

I believe that the certificate will also operate properly since the server is the same name and IP as the location where it is now working. I will even move the wire over so that it is the same switch and port as the old server. Since the specs are the same (other than 2008R2 SQL on 64 bit OS) all connection strings will continue to work. Any issues foreseen with this plan?
