Migrate from 2008 R2 to 2016

Can you do a direct path migration from SQL 2008 R2 to 2016?
What is the best approach on encrypted 8TB databases?  Detach/Attach Databases?  Backup Restore? Detach/Clone disks in NetApp Snap Manager?
If I use the detach attach to new install of SQL Server 2016 will it go through the upgrade process when I reattach them?
