SQL Server Clustering SQL 2008 - Add clustered instances to an existing set of servers

Hi,

I am looking at the feasabillity of adding a two node cluster to an existing pair of SQL servers (Server 2008 enterprise - SQL Standard edition). They are unfortunately already live but do not have any HA. I know that it should be possible but I have not found anyone who has done  it successfully. I am worried as the existing server(s) are both connected to an existing SAN (which would also be used for the new MS cluster quorum and drives). I can'r risk this failing so I need to make sure that there is a roll back plan.

The idea was to create 2 new instances per server(as you cannot make an exiting non clustered instance into a cllustered instance) and cluster these two together as a set of an active /passive cluster. I need to make sure that installing the new instances and setting up the ms cluster does not interfear with the existing set up in case I need to roll back. This allows me to perform a side-by-side upgrade.

Can this be done? Has anyone ever done it?

Much appreciated to anyone that responds

Thanks

Elliot
