SQL Server SAN Upgrade

$

Hello,

I am using SQL Server 2012 SE in a 2 node cluster and planning to upgrade the underlying SAN. I have backed up all SQL Server databases. created login script and scripted out all agent jobs. Also presented the new SAN LUNS including the quorum to the cluster. The old drives are J for Data, K for Logs, L for Temp data and Logs, M for backups, N for quorum and the new SAN luns are P data, Q quorum, X logs,Y backups and Z temp data and logs. At the time of cluster installation few years back the cluster used J as the root drive and rest of them as shown above, hence Master, Model, msdb are sitting in J:\MSSQL11.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\. Also I have filestream configured.

My question is would detach and attach work for the SAN upgrade? I want to detach all  user databases that are sitting in J:\Data and K:\ Logs to P:\Data and X:\Logs, Move the tempdb from L: to Z: through alter statements  similarly master, model, msdb databases through alter statements from J:\ to P:\ ?

If so how do I use the new Quorum drive as the actual quorum and Filestream?

Thanks a ton for your inputs in advance.

Environment

Our machine is running Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard and SQL Server 2008 R2 (SP2) - 10.50.4000.0 (Intel X86).

Problem encountered

When installing the update for KB3045313 in Windows Update, the following error was prompted (error screen attached):

Error(s) found:

Code 80246013 Windows Update ran into a problem.

Then I tried to download the update from Microsoft and install the update manually, the following error was prompted (error screen attached):

The following feature couldn't be installed:

.NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)

As .NET framework is not compulsory for SQL Server 2008 R2, how can we install the update for KB3045313 when SQL Server development using NET Framework 3.5 is not required for us.

Problem Installing SQL Server 2012 Express

Hello

I'm in the process of installing SQL Server 2012 and the install is continually failing. It reports to possibly be a problem with the package; I've tried downloading three times now and setup has failed each time. There is a link below to the install log file which I believe will likely be more help than my attempting to describe the symptoms but please let me know if there is any additional information which would help in finding the problem.

Thanks in advance.

Why am I getting: Critical Update for SQL Server 2016 MSVCRT Prerequisites KB3164398 - Error 0x80070643 ?

For over a week, at least 6 attempts to install KB3164398 have failed during Windows Update:

Critical Update for SQL Server 2016 MSVCRT Prerequisites KB3164398 - Error 0x80070643

This is blocking other needed updates from coming down.

How do I get this "road block" out of the way until Microsoft can find the time to withdraw it and replace it with one that will actually install?

If you think development is tough now, think how hard it was using punched cards :-)

Azure - can't see stored procedures any more

Trying to view stored procedure on Azure SQL Server via SSMS and now getting this error message. I know this has been mentioned elsewhere - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/27690417/ssms-sql-azure-v12-preview-unknown-property-isnativelycompiled - but the solution seems to have been to install a patch on the server! So presumably this means Azure have to install the patch.

The image (if I were allowed to add it!) would say this:

Hi there!

How can I properly install this SQLServer 2014 with error about .NET framework 3.5 not installed on Windows 10?

.NET Framework 3.5 is not compatible with windows 10 base on the system requirements.

I already have the .NET Framework 4.6.2 installed on my laptop.

Also, based on this link, http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/forum/insider_wintp-insider_install/how-to-instal-net-framework-35-on-windows-10/450b3ba6-4d19-45ae-840e-78519f36d7a4 , I can install the ver3.5 on windows 10 but Command Prompt and Turn Windows Features On/Off are not working.

I hope that you can help me... I need this to be installed as soon as possible. Thanks

Hi,

Im trying to install a new Sql Server which will be added to an availability groups. Its meant to be standalone ( ie not part of FCI).

I have enabled cluster services and added the server to the existing cluster but when I try and install I get this validation error on the install screen.

The directory d:\xxxxxxxxx\xxxxx  is not a valid path.  Standalone sql server on wfc cluster cannot have files on shared disk locations

Any ideas where i have gone wrong here?

SQL Event after server re-boot

We are running SQL Server 2008R2 in a Windows Server 2008R2 environment, recently the server was rebooted due to maintenance, however when we started up SQL we noticed the live database was no longer available, it was no longer listed as a database.

We had to restore the files from a backup to continue as normal, this is not ideal.

I have noticed this in event viewer which I believe to be related : FCB::Open failed: Could not open file E:\Nav_data\***.mdf for file number 1.  OS error: 32(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15100).

Has anyone seen this before, or has an idea of how to resolve it?

Many Thanks!

Licensing KEY / Audit

I understand the licensing information isn't stored within SQL.  HOWEVER, how the heck does Microsoft (or partner) audit our system and tell me I've got so many "CAL based" and "CORE based" and then start talking about license"true-up", etc.  HOW/WHERE do they get this information from my system(s)?

On a SQL 2012 Enterprise instance with the security model option set for SQL Authentication, creation of a "SQL Authenticated" user or changing the password of a user on this instance is no longer possible.  My account belongs to a security group with sysadmin rights.  Status of the broken account(s) [plural - also created a test account and it has the same issue] is grant and enabled.   User has CONNECTSQL rights.  Login is not locked out.

In attempting to login, after resetting the password to a known that has more than adequately met the minimum password requirements, and upon using the new or the login in question, with the known password, the error returned is "Login failed for user 'usernamegoeshere'"

A repair from the bootstrap was attempted "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap" and it ran with success.

Also attempted a GRANT CONNECT ON ENDPOINT::[TSQL Default TCP] to [public]

Effective rights are "CONNECTSQL"

Next attempt will be to rebuild the master but before going that far, it would be nice to have some feedback.  I've never seen this before.  Title contains error from the ERRORLOG.

As the title states, if I attempt to apply changes in SQL Config Mgr I get the error:

Hi there, I've been having problems getting onto the server at work, I've been using the server now for over a year now, and this is the first time this has happened. All my colleges at work do not have the same problem, so there is not a problem with the server. Is there anything that I can do to sort this problem out.

Thanks Jayson

SQL 2008 vs. SQL 2012

Good Afternoon,

We are in the process of migrating our databases that are currently SQL 2005 and SQL 2008 to new servers.
Server OS is Windows 2012 R2 w/ SQL 2012 installed.
SQL Servers are virtual built on ESX 6.0 hosts. Microsoft Clustering is being used along with the SQL Always On technology.
Our DBAs have been able to get SQL 2012 installed, setup the resources in the cluster and not have issues.

One of the applications they are migrating is only certified on SQL 2008.  The servers were built and Failover Clustering was installed.   The cluster was created and has the core resources..cluster name, cluster IP and FSW for the Quorum.
SQL 2008 was installed on the first node of this cluster without issue.  When the DBAs attempt to install it  on the second node they are receiving errors during the rule checks.

First error was resolved by using the Install-WindowsFeature RSAT-Cluster-ServerAutomation Command.  Ran through the install again and it is failing the rule check looking for a cluster disk.  Normally, when SQL 2012 is installed and using Always On, we do not have to add the disks into cluster since they will not be failing over between nodes.

Is there some difference between how a cluster installation is performed for SQL 2008 vs. SQL 2012?
Are AlwaysOn availability groups an option in SQL 2008?  And if so, how do we get past this rule check?  Did see where you can run the setup.exe with a switch to skip rules checks, but can't imagine that is a best practice.
Since it is a SQL 2008 cluster, does there need to be at least one shared disk in the cluster? This presents the problem because the nodes of the clusters are in out data centers. The disks are vmdk files.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.  Up to this point all the clusters using the Always On Technology have been Windows 2012 R2\ w SQL 2012 installed. This is the first AO cluster that is using SQL 2008.

Thank You
