Patching windows for sql server

$

Hello,

I was verifying the number of windows updates I needed to run against the current non production and production environments for our database servers hosting SQL Server.

I see important updates and optional updates but no critical updates. I am interested in critical and important updates only and would install only those whenever I am patching database servers. Is there a way to determine which of the available important updates are really required and which I can ignore? Or is it a better practice to patch all important updates too?

Thanks

"You do not have exclusive access..."

Upon opening an MSAccess database, I (and other users) get the error message "You do not have exclusive access to the database at this time. If you proceed...." . We actually have to acknowledge several of these messages to finally get to the main menu of the database, at which time it works fine. When only one user is using the database, the error doesn't appear.

The database is on a server, and has several users, all connected thru a network. All users open the same Access file to use the database. The database is split, with all of the tables being on SQL Server.

Further explanation of the error when it appears: "When attempting to open a database in Design View, or when trying to save design changes to a database object, you may encounter this error message. Access requires an exclusive lock on the database to make design changes on some object types. This error indicates that Access has not obtained an exclusive lock on the database...." {there is more in the explanation}

All this happens on opening the database - no design changes are underway, and the database is not opening in Design View. I have verified that none of the other users is open in exclusive mode. No objects are being updated (although data might be being changed). I am the only user that can get to the navigation pane, and I never do that while other users are on the system (I do it at night, when all users are absent). Is there some way that one of the forms or tables or queries has retained an opening that locks the db? What are some possibilities that might throw this error? Is it because of the update to Access 2013 (which occurred some time ago, but the problem has only arisen recently)?

Incidentally, on the same server, I have 3 other Access-SQLServer split databases, all with multiple users, all users using a single Access file in each db, none of which have this problem. The main difference between the problem database and the others is the heavy use of VBA instead of macros to perform actions – is there something in VBA that might cause the error?

I have seen solutions on some forums that indicate that giving each user their own copy of the front end database will resolve this – but that would be a monstrous task for me, since the databases are frequently modified with new reports, calculations and features.

Can you help me find the problem that throws this error?

Thank You!

How to uninstall SP3 for SQL Server 2008 R2? Asks for 'SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Management Studio' disk

$

I'd like to have a clean uninstall procedure for SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition SP3 before I roll this out to other servers. On a lab server, I've installed SP3 (already had SP2). When I try to uninstall SP3, I run into the following:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Management Studio' disk and click OK." Use source: Please insert next disk drop-down and a browse button.

What are my options here? Can't find SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 media on MSDN or anywhere else.

1) Uninstall SQL Server Management Studio first, then try uninstalling SP3? Would I have to uninstall all shared features or just SSMS to get further?

2) During the SP3 uninstall process, could I point to SQL Server 2008 R2 RTM media, then reinstall SP2?

3) Create a slipstreamed SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 and point to it?

4) Something else?

What's the easiest way to proceed and why am I seeing this behavior? While there aren't likely to be problems with SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3, I'd feel remiss if I didn't have a tested uninstall process for SP3. The SQL Server instances in question may have been installed with slipstreamed media (SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2)--perhaps that's why I'm seeing this. Whoever provided the slipstreamed media no longer has it.

Thanks.

I installed mssql 2008 r2 using web platform 5.0 on windows 7. My issue is it did not offer to install both windows sysadmin and sa account only windows account. What are my options now ? I use a lot of remote connections to web servers and many times they only allow administrator accounts to login. I prefer a SA account anyhow.

sql server 2008 version upgrade failed access to path is denied

upgrading from 2008 r2 eval to 2008 r2 enterprise.

Use the maintenance option from setup. Get pretty far along in the process.  But then the following error. ( an additional note. setup warns that I am running sql server on a domain controller server. )

The link the error message points to has nothing to say. Why would my sql server upgrade fail? If I have to reinstall, will I lose my database data?

thanks,

Windows Update Weird?

Windows Update is offering KB3072779 (MSSQL Server 2012 SP3).

However, we are running MSSQL 2014 SP1 CU4 (12.0.4436.0) which was an in-place upgrade from MSSQL 2012 SP2.

This is on Windows Server 2012 R2 on ESXi 6.

I'm ignoring the update.  Seems strange that it would be offered?

Win 2k8 Server IP routing with SQL Server

Hi Folks,

I'm looking for advice on if it is possible to have SQL server function with 1 database accessed by 3 subnets when the 3 subnets are connected directly to the server and the Server's NIC  is configured with IP routing to allow access from each subnet to the SQL server to read and update information into the one database.

I have done testing previously with accessing a file share from multiple subnets by connecting those subnets directly to the server and configuring IP routing on the server but I have never done it with SQL.

SQL Standard Core Based License

I have a server with 32 cores. I need to purchase SQL Standard 2014 for this server. SQL Standard 2014 supports maximum of 16 cores. Is there any way of utilising all of 32 cores of server.

For eg. If I purchase 16 core license and install 2 instances of SQL Standard on the server. Will both instances use same 16 cores or different 16 cores.

Also 1 question is if I can install multiple instances of SQL on same server machine with single license. So to install I will need to purchase 8*2core packs or 16*2 core packs. Assuming I am using processor affinity to use all 32 cores of the server.

Missing MSI files error during SQL Server Patching

$
0
0

I added a new node to a SQL Server failover cluster. When i was trying to update the SQL server 2008  r2 with SP2 on the New node I got an error . All the existing nodes already have  SQL Server service SP2, so the new node also needs to be SP2. I am getting the missing msi file error when applying SP2 to the new node.

SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:

The cached MSI file 'C:\Windows\Installer\df540d0.msi' is missing.
Its original file is 'sql_engine_core_inst_loc.msi' and it was installed for product 'SQL Server 2008 R2 Database Engine Services'
from 'E:\en_sqlserver2008r2ent_x86_x64\1033_ENU_LP\x64\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_loc_msi\',
 version '10.50.1600.1', language 'ENU'.
To resolve this problem, recover the missing file from the installation media and start setup again.
For more information about how to resolve this problem, see 'Steps to restore the missing Windows Installer cache files' (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=144387)  in the Microsoft Knowledge Base.

Error code 0x84B20002.

My questions are:

1) how do the msi files become missing? Are they deleted automatically or do they get deleted manually?

2) I have read articles online about how to resolve the problem. But what i need to know is how and why do the files get missing?
