SQL Server 2014 on Windows 8.1 - Setup Failure - C:\Windows\Temp folder

$

Well, the title pretty much says it all.  I'm installing SQL Server 2014 Developer Edition on Windows 8.1 Pro.  The installation uses domain service accounts for all the services.  The installation progress well until the end.  Then, I get the following message:

Updating permission setting for folder C:\Windows\Temp failed.  The folder permission setting were supposed to be set to (and an ACL list followed by what looked like a object sid).

I'm running setup as administrator.

I tried to manually set the permissions, but that's not working (access is denied).  I also turned off user account control and hit retry.  That failed to.

So, before I go in there and take ownership of everything on the C drive, and grant myself full control over every file on the computer, I thought I ask for what I'm "supposed" to do.  I'm not going to tolerate this file control crap for very long.  I have better things to do.

SSMS restarts itself after I close it

Hi,

This strange behavior started recently. If I close SSMS, it restarts itself as if it crashed and trying to restore itself. Even if I hit cancel as it's restarting, it will restart itself yet again. This happens twice. Any idea what's causing this?

Thanks, Sam

The Detail.txt file has this:

(01) 2016-01-11 11:14:58 Slp: Error: Action "Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.ScoExtension.StopServiceAction" threw an exception during execution.
(01) 2016-01-11 11:14:59 Slp: Microsoft.SqlServer.Setup.Chainer.Workflow.ActionExecutionException: Failed to start service MSSQLSERVER. ---> Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.ScoExtension.ExecuteStopServiceFailedException: Failed to start service MSSQLSERVER. ---> Microsoft.SqlServer.Configuration.Sco.ScoException: A stop control has been sent to a service that other running services are dependent on.
(01) 2016-01-11 11:14:59 Slp:  ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: A stop control has been sent to a service that other running services are dependent on.

As far as I can tell, SQL Server is running fine, but these errors consume a lot of space.  We do not use replication or fulltext.

Where should I look to fix this problem?

SQL Server Management Studio has stopped working when changing fonts and colors

I installed sql server management studio 2012 about 3 months ago to test drive and from time to time I'll attempt to change my background color of the TSql editor "In the fonts and colors option under tools"; however, the entire studio crashes and restarts.

This has been ongoing since I first installed it 3 or 4 months ago, and have waited on posting to a fourm for help, assuming I am not the only one this is happening to I've waited for an update that might fix the issue.

I've got to start on some heavy scripting and that god awful white background kills my eyes. I've got to have a black background or my work day is cut off by about 3 hours becuase of strain.

What can I provide to someone that would help me with this?

Thank you,

Erik

Suggest Quorum Configuration for High Availability Group

$

I'm wondering if someone could please give me some advice regarding the Quorum configuration for my High Availability group. We have 3 sites across the UK, with users for a particular system at each site. This system has a SQL Database at it's core. Our primary site has two separate buildings, 100m apart, but with fibre channel connections between. I have a SQL Server in each of these buildings, and one at one of the remote sites. All servers are running Windows 2012R2 & SQL 2014. I've created an availability group with synchronous commit between the two buildings at the primary site, and asynchronous commit to the remote. Network connectivity between sites rarely goes down as it causes the business significant problems. Currently all nodes have a quorum vote, for a total of 3 votes - an odd number as per best practice. However, Kendra Little from Brent Ozar Ltd., says we should always have a file share witness, and details a similar situation to mine, but with unreliable network connectivity offsite.

I could add a file share witness, and remove the vote from the remote site node, but that file share would be in one of the buildings in the primary site. If we lose that building (or it's network), automatic failover wouldn't work.

I could add 2 file share witnesses (one in each building), and leave the remote site node with a vote, to give 5 votes. Or even add file share witnesses at remote sites (but this seems a bad idea).

Any suggestions would be appreciated, but I'm currently leaning towards leaving things as is. The system's application servers will reside in one building at the primary site, but I'm planning on using Veeam to give them resilience.

Many thanks,

Pete Cousins

Help Viewer 1.1 repair after SQL 2014 installation

I am seeking assistance installing or repairing HelpViewer 1.1 installed with SQL Server 2014.

I receive the following error when choosing “I want to use local settings” option from Help Library Manager,

This page can’t be displayed

  • Make sure the web address http://127.0.0.1:47873 is correct
  • Look for the page with your search engine
  • Refresh the page in a few minutes

I attempted repairing the help viewer by executing the installation file found at

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Help Viewer\v1.0\Microsoft Help Viewer 1.1\install.exe

and choosing the REPAIR option.  The repair function completes; however, the error remains.

I examined the SQL 2014 installation disc and found nothing useful under the Maintenance/ Repair topic. I really do not look forward to a complete reinstall of SQL server and components so I may use local help files.

Please, anyone with insight or suggestions, I am happy the hear from you.

Thanks

Hello,

I'm trying to install SQL Server 2014 from the CD provided through my MSDN subscription.

I launch the wizard, which completes all steps until the "Installation Progress" step (the one before last) .

In this step, the program freezes at the following action: "Install_sql_common_core_Cpu64_Action : Write_NativeImages_64 : Generating Native Images".

Help ! What should I do ??

Unable to upgrade SQL Server 2008 r2 cluster to SQL Server 2012 SP1, failes with Failed to retrieve data for this request

I don't really understand why it would fail. Sometimes when I start the setup process it is fine, next time it doesn't work. I'm not comfortable continuing with the upgrade it being flaky like this. I'm just wondering what could cause this? Here's the output from the logs:

I am getting this message and have SP1 installed. Here is the results of SELECT @@version from my MSSMS:

The version is higher than SP1, however the last line displays Service Pack 1.  Any ideas on why it won't install SP2?

Many thanks,

We have MSSQL 2008 R2 SP2 running on Windows Server 2008 R2 (64 bit). We want to upgrade the OS to 2012 R2 and MSSQL to 2014. Can this be done? and if yes then which one from the below options are recommended?

a. Upgrade the DB to 2014 first and then upgrade the OS

b. Upgrade the OS to 2012 R2 first and then the DB

Send mail from SQL: permission denied

I have a trigger like this:

ALTER trigger [dbo].[TR_AlertOnConnection] on [dbo].[Log] with execute as owner for insert

In the trigger, the sp_send_dbmail is called to send an email. When a row is insterted in the table, I get an error:

The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'sp_send_dbmail', database 'msdb', schema 'dbo'.

I understand that I the user must be a member of DatabaseMailUserRole in order to send mail. But... since I execute the trigger "as owner", which user I have to put in this group?

Setup stuck in features selection page

Hi All,

I am upgrading SQL Server 2008 and adding feature "Full text search" in my windows 7 SP1 for installing AX components (Retail POS, Async Client, Retail Channel Configuration Utility).

SQL setup get stuck when I select the feature "Full text Search) and click next (Please see image).

How to solve this?

I have restarted the setup 3 to 4 times and even restarted my machine.

The cabinet files 'Sql.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used

A fresh windows 2008 R2 standard server trying to install SQL 2008 R2 Standard and I'm getting the following error message when it goes to install "Integration Services".

"TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup
------------------------------

The following error has occurred:

The cabinet file 'Sql.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used. This could indicate a network error, an error reading from the CD-ROM, or a problem with this package."

It's not a bad cd burn, as I'm installing from mounted ISO files. I've tried downloading them several times, and even tried a different version of SQL (technet instead of openvalue) and its still throwing the same error message. I also don't actually see a SQL.cab on the install disc, or packed in any of the MSI files. So I'm guessing this error is misleading, and something else is to blame, but I can't seem to find a solution to this.

Not sure why I'm having this issue with a fresh install, but if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know as I'm out of ideas! One of the suggestions i did try was copying the install files to a local directory and running it from there. I've done that, and it gave the same error unfortunately.
