SQL Server Upgrade 2000 - 2005 files read only but not really

$

Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade from SQL Server 2000 to 2005. The problem I am having is that when I try to attach the existing db files I get a message that says "database cannot be upgraded because it is read only or has read only files...."

Thing is... there is no write protection on the files.

Can anyone advise me on how to overcome this problem so that I can attach the db, please?

Thank you

Robert

What to deinstall and reinstall on SQL 2014

Company just gave me an old desktop Windows 7 system for development, already has all sorts of stuff installed including SQL 2014, but there's something wrong with the local instance, I can't connect to it. I can stop and start it from the configuration manager, but cannot connect to it from the studio, rejects my windows authentication - and SA with no password didn't work either. Apparently whoever had it before me, did something to it.

So not sure what my options are, decided to just nuke it and reinstall.  But I went to the control panel and program widget, and there are about six different SQL 2014 items.  Is there just one that takes the others with it?

Thanks,

Josh

Installing SQL Server 2014 to a different drive and performance impact.

Hi,

I am currently working on automating the SQL Server 2014 install which also allows customers to choose a non-default install path for SQL Server, which would be the /INSTANCEDIR switch according this link: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144259.aspx

However, I also noticed that the switches /INSTALLSHAREDWOWDIR and /INSTALLSHAREDDIR paths could also change.

My question is as follows:

If the user specifies a non-default, different drive path SQL install location, such as E:\ABC, could I leave the /INSTALLSHAREDDIR and /INSTALLSHAREDWOWDIR  switches as is, or for better performance do I need to change that to E:\ also?  If I do change it to E:\ do I assume it needs to be assigned to E:\program files and E:\program files (x86) respectively or could I assign it to the same /INSTANCEDIR switch path?

Thanks in advance.

Cannot Generate SSPI context

Hi guys,

I have a weird error I cannot resolve.

Setup:

Windows 2008 SBS server running SQL express 2014, Services are using a Domain Account with privileges.

Problem:

Client computer on the same domain as the SQL. Using the ODBC to create a user DSN sometimes works and sometime just disconnects and when I try to configure it again I get Cannot Generate SSPI Context.

If I restart the server it most likely will work again but then at some point will just disconnects and return this  error again when I try to reconfigure.

I can't seem to pinpoint this error to anything specific.

Any ideas please???

Adding SSRS to SQL 2012 - What media do I need?

$

I have a normally autonomous business unit that is running SQL 2012 Enterprise. They've asked me to help them add SSRS. I thought it would be a snap, but I can't get past launching the installer.

No one knows where the installation media is.  I thought I would download it from Microsoft, but I see there's media for Server/CAL and Per-core.  Guess what?  No one knows what they bought the first time around.  I've told them that they've got to contact whomever they purchased it from and find out what they bought.

Not wanting to hold my breath, does anyone know if evil will befall me if I use the wrong media for added SSRS?

SQL Server 2012 RC0 restore database

Hi,

I have SQL Server 2012 RC0 64-bit installed & running (on Win 2008 Server R2 64-bit virtual machine). I was trying to restore SQL Server 2008 database backup using SSMS and I don't see OK or Cancel buttons on GUI for "Restore Database". All I see is"Verify Backup Media" as shown below:

FYI, but when I scripted the restore command, it worked fine from query window. Has anybody experienced this?

Thank you all for your time & help.

Certificate not visible in SQL 2012

Hi,

I want to assign a certificate to my SQL server to encrypt data between client and server. As the server will be accessible from the internet I registered a certificate with an official certificate authority. The certificate is not visible in the console to assign to the instance. It is available in IIS.

I already tried to import the certificate in the personal store of the server as well as the personal store of the service account assigned to the engine service for that instance. Also tried to start the SQL configuration console with the service account of the instance, but still the list with available certificates remains empty.

What are the actual requirements for this to work? I now found some people reporting that it need to have the same name as the server. But as the server name is not the same locally in the AD domain compared to the DNS name on the internet, this will never be the case.

Please advise.

Thanks

Is it necessary to uninstall 'SQL Server 2014 Management Studio' prior to reinstalling it?

$

I recently installedSQL Server 2014 Management Studio.  I selected all components, but the following failed to install.  (I can run queries, but some database diagrams are not showing all relationships - it's not apparent if this is related to the failure to install these components.)

  • Reporting Services - Native
  • Database Engine Services
  • Data Quality Services
  • Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search
  • SQL Server Replication

I already hadSQL Server 2008 (R2) installed as well as Visual Studio 2010.  (I installedVisual Studio 2010 SP1 as a prerequisite for SQL Server 2014.)

While installing SQL Server 2014, I was asked if I wanted to use the existing settings fromSQL Server 2008 (R2).  I responded 'no', but am now wondering whether this contributed to the failed install.

This raises two questions:

1.  Can I still capture the settings fromSQL Server 2008 (R2) and apply them to SQL Server 2014.

2.  If not, I would like to reinstall SQL Server 2014, so I can respond 'yes' when asked if I want to use theSQL Server 2008 (R2) settings.   In this case, would it be necessary to first uninstallSQL Server 2014 before reinstalling it?

I'd appreciate any ideas on this. Thanks.

SQL Server Error

A program that I bought also installs SQL Sever 2012 Local DB.  I have tried several time to active the program and each time I get an error that says  "Your SQL Server installation is either corrupted or has been tampered with. (Unknown package id).  Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem."   I have un-installed and re-installed many times to no avail.

I am using a work-around by going into a DOS shell and deleting, creating and running "v11.0" within the binn file, 110 file of SQL Server.  This works but I have to do this each time I want to use the program.  Also it will error out while using the program and I have to run the work-around in order to keep going.   Very frustrating.

I need to know what is causing this issue and how to correct it so I don't have to keep fixing it every time I want to run my program

During installation of SQL Server 2008 express I get the error "SQL Server Browser service group does not exists. Check

for earlier failures in the setup."

This prevents me from installing it completely it seems. After the install the SQL database service will not run.

In this case I'm attempting to install it so Autodesk Vault will install afterwards so the instance in question is

autodeskvault.

Please let me know what other information you need.

Uninstall "SQL 2008 R2 Express" (Common Files & Database Engine Shared)??

$

I've been trying to uninstall SQL 2008 R2 Express but no luck.

I think I didn't remove the components in right order in Control Panel..

Now, I have left with a component calll "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup (English)" which I can't get rid of..

When I try to uninstall it, it gives me an error "Warning 26003. MS Server 2008 R2 Setup Support Files cannot be uninstalled because the following products are installed:

SQL Server 2008 R2 Common Files

SQL Server 2008 R2 Database Engine Shared"

If I click OK,

it says something like "Try the installation again using a valid copy of the installation package"sqlsupport.msi"

at this point, it wouldn't let me uninstall nor reinstall..

Any comments would be appreciated. Thank you!

SQL Browser Failed to Start - 2012 Installation

Hi.

I get the following error installing SQL Server 2012.

SQL Server Browser configuration for feature 'SQL_Browser_Redist_SqlBrowser_Cpu32' was cancelled by user after a previous installation failure. The last attempted step: Starting the SQL Server Browser service 'SQLBrowser', and waiting for up to '900' seconds for the process to complete.

I know there's a fair bit around on the web about this but not found anything that specifically matches my circumstances.

Build: Windows 7 Professional, 64 bit, Intel i7, 32GB RAM

Windows is up to date and I installed VS2010 and office 2010 first.

I installed all the 2012 components (bar reporting services since am going to install sharepoint 2010 later) under the default instance. I installed SSAS Multi-Dimensional under the default instance.

I then ran the install again to install SSAS Tabular under a named instance. This is where I get the issue above. I've actually had this before with MS XML 6 on SQL Server 2008 R2. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but the install locks MSXML6 which means the SQL Browser can't start. I know about slipstreaming installs but I fixed this before by removing MSXML6 and then it worked. I tried repairing the install but the log says I need to remove first because it never succeeded. When looking at the installed components I don't see MSXML6 and I haven't found any log messages pointing towards the same issue. I simply get the error message above. I need to do some more digging when I get time but any pointers would be good... since repeating the install in a trial and error process is sapping a lot of time.

Thanks in advance...

SQL Server 2008 R2 Install issue - missing "Installation Configuration" step

$

A full install of SQL Server 2008 R2 x64 on my Windows 7 laptop resulted in being able to run SSMS, however there was no local server available that I could find. From other posts I used "osql -L" on the command prompt and it showed that there were no local servers.

Research led me to believe that it could have been due to a bad install, so I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice now with the same impact. On this last attempt I actually used a step by step guide on MSDN, and noticed something weird. The guide (and I think my installation attempts on other PC's), showed these three steps as part of the install:

  • Feature Selection
  • Installation Configuration
  • Disk Space Requirements

When installing on my laptop I only have these options:

  • Feature Selection
  • Disk Space Requirements

I believe setting the defaults for a local server are handled in the missing step, which could explain why I don't have a local server configured after install.

I've been pulling my hair out on this one...any help is much appreciated.

We have recently migrated one of our server to SQL2014 . We have a total of 16 processors in this server, but we are able to use only 4 processors.  When tried to select more processors we are getting an error

Affinity Mask specified is greater than the number of CPU's Supported or licensed on this edition of sql server. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:5833)

Seems that only 4 processors are online the rest of them are offline.

Any ideas on how to bring the remaining processors online

SQL Server 2012 Error

SQL Server Management Studio fails to load with the error message "Microsoft Visual Studio Isolated Shell Environment." "Cannot find one or more components.  Please reinstall the application."

This started happening after I tried to install the "Beta" of Visual Studio 11.  That installation failed during install.  I have removed all of the artifacts that I can find from that installation and I have completely removed SQL Server 2012 and reinstalled multiple times in different ways.  All other features seem to work.

Any idea's on which file I messed up by trying to install the beta?

"This product does not require a product key."

can anyone help?

SSMS on windows Server 2012R2, Connect To Server dialog has a long lag of about 3 seconds per character typed

In a new installation of SQL Server 2008R2 Standard in a windows Server2012R2, we have mixed-mode authentication enabled. Using Windows authentication, we are able to authenticate using SQL Management Studio as expected. Using SQL authentication, SQL Management Studio will not let me authenticate. Two strange symptoms:

  • Typing in the password field on the SQL Management Studio Connect To Server dialogue has a long lag of about 3 seconds per character typed
  • Authentication fails, even though the password is entered correctly

Using SQL Authentication and using another SSMS that is installed in a different server we are able to connect to the instance.

Any Idea in what to do in this cases?
