Enterprise Core-based Licensing for SQL2012

$

We have a 16 core SQL Server 2012 Enterprise License for a server.

Question 1: When installed, does this mean that SQL will only use 16 physical server cores even if the server has 24 cores in total?

Question 2: Not taking account the disk or RAID layout of the server, would you chose to have more cores OR a faster processor. Assume this is a mixed use server, some data warehouse, some OLTP.

Thank you,

Denka

Restore Upgrade issue

Dear All,

let me explain my current situation

we have 2 server, one is running SQL Server 2008 (32 bit) and the others running SQL Server 2012 (64 bit).

when we try to backup restore the data from SQL Server 2008 (32 bit) to SQL Server 2012 (64 bit), we found that restoring process was not going so well, some of the database access, schema, was not restored well, so we have to running the script manually to complete the back up process.

i just want to ask, is it possible that issue was caused from difference version (2008(32 bit) --> 2012(64 bit)) or is it caused by platform difference (32 to 64 bit) ?

could some on ehelp me figure it out and explain it to me, why it could happen?

thank you so much

Best Regards,

Bambang

Have Microsoft removed the above feature for use with SQL Server?

If so which version was it removed from ? We are trying to upgrade from Sql Server 2005 to 2012 but do not seem to have the above available when attempting to use the Linked Server option.

SQL upgrade

Hi all,

I have Windows Server 2003 Std running Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (RTM) - 9.0.1399

and Windows Server 2003R2 Std running SQL Server 2000 (8.0.2066)

I want to upgrade both server to 2008 R2. What is the upgrade path for Windows OS and SQL?

SQL server 2000 is incompatible with 2008 r2. Do I need to upgrade SQL first to 2005 and the OS (in-place upgrade) to 2008R2?

Overlapped I/O error 997 installing SQL Server 2014 Express on Windows Server 2012 R2

$

I'm attempting to install SQL Server 2014 Express on a Windows Server 2012 R2 system. When I do the install, it fails (several times) with an "Error: 997. Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.". From searching the web, I can see many people have had this problem with this installer and other non-SQL server installers.

I've tried every solution I can find discussed, but none help with my problems The system is fully updated, with the exception of the KB2538243 (VC 2008 SP1 redist), which is probably failing for the same reason.

I've tried removing several updates mentioned in other articles (KB2918614). I've confirmed that I'm not using a temporary profile.

Does anyone have an idea of how I can solve this issue?

Thanks,

Zack

SQL Server Mgt Studio 2008 installation problem - Key not valid for use in specified state

I'm setting up SQL Server Management Studio 2008 on my laptop.  It installed fine, but failed to import a regsrver file exported from another machine. This appears to have been due to the fact that I exported the file with usernames and passwords, although I must admit that's pretty darned inconvenient if it can't be done.

Nevertheless, I exported the file again without usernames and passwords, but the new install now won't let me even see servers, let alone import any new ones.

When I start Studio, it gives me the "Key not valid for use in specified state" error.  When I 'continue', I'm delivered to a screen with the 'registered servers' pane crippled.  It has no contents at all and no ability to add, select, import, export.  Nothing there.

How do I rectify this?

The installation is on Windows 7 Home Premium.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I am trying to install SQL Server 2012 Developer edition and I get the error at the bottom.

My system: 64 bit Windows 7

Things I have done:

I have downloaded a different ISO from the MSDN site twice and I still get the same error.

I have trying the installer in Admin mode

FYI Previously I was able to successfully install an instance of Sql 2012 but I need to uninstall it and reinstall.  After the uninstall, I have not been able to reinstall.  Any ideas would be great.

Thanks

Folks,

I am new to sqlserver environment , i got to task to install sqlserver 2005 with latest service pack.I have couple questions regards to this and i thought i can get the answers here.

My understanding is i should get the sqlserver 2005 software with sp4 directly and install the same ,is this correct ? or do i need to install the Base version of sqlserver( Which release) and then apply sp4 patch to the base release ? Please clarify.

And also can you given some basic idea on msdn licensing pertaining to  sqlserver 2005.

Thanks

Surendra.

SQL Server 2008 R2 - Adding Replication Components to an Existing Installation

$

Hi All

I have a SQL Server 2008 R2 instance that I need to install Replication components on.

I've been going through the appropriate wizard and selecting to upgrade an existing instance, the wizard recognizes the SQL Server that we have installed so that one is selected. On the next screen, I'd expect to see the feature selector with everything we currently have installed selected and greyed out, however nothing is selected (except for BOL).

So in order to select Replication Components, I'd have to also select Database Engine, suggesting that a new SQL Instance would be installed. Not wanting to do this, I'm having to abort.

I've tried a number of different ISOs now (one I found lying around on the server), but I haven't had any luck. My only option now seems to be to recreate the instance entirely, but that being a last resort, I was wondering if anyone may have had some experience with this problem?

I am running the installer with the highest level of Windows and SQL access, if that helps.

Thank you

Unable to download Cumulative Update Packages for SQL Server 2012 SP2

I have requested a hotfix link for the Cumulative Update Package 4 for SQL Server 2012 SP2 (build no. 11.0.5569). Unfortunately, the link I received by e-mail does not work. It returns a 500 Internal Server Error, which leads me to think that the problem is with Microsoft's download servers.

The hotfix link is: http://hotfixv4.microsoft.com/SQL%20Server%202012/sp2/SQLServer2012_SP2_CU4_3007556_11_0_5569_/11.0.5569.0/free/481684_intl_x64_zip.exe

The hotfix repairs an urgent bug in our installation, and we really need to obtain it somehow. When can we expect the hotfix download to work? Alternatively, does anyone know of a mirror site for downloading the hotfix?

Thanks in advance.

SQL Server Service Pack Install and SSRS Scale Out Environment

$

We have an error in our SSRS environment that looks to be addressed in SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3. Our set up is a scale out environment, 2 SSRS app servers and 1 SSRS database server. For simplicity as we are moving to 2012 soon, I would like to only install the service pack on one of the SSRS app servers. Anyone aware of any reason besides keeping servers consistent to not do this? I don't want to go through the time to upgrade the SSRS SQL Server if I don't have to.

Thanks

ERROR: The cabinet file 'Sql.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used

As the title indicates, I'm having this error during installation. It occurs when I try to install
the "Management Studio" part of the program. I've tried a bunch of things like
copying to hard drive and installing, but to no avail. To isolate the problem, i've even tried removing Reporting services, since at the time of failure it seems to be trying to install/configure the Microsoft.Reporting Services dll.

Additionally, I have SQL Express installed (installed it separately, not as part of the SQL 2005 DVD), VS 2005, .NET Framework 2.0, SQL Management Studio Express CTP. Could the Management Studio Express be causing a problem?

Please note:
Although the error is about missing / corrupt Sql.cab, I have searched the entire dvd for the said file, but there is no file called Sql.cab on the dvd. Am I missing something?

Any solution would be greatly appreciated.

TIA

Can't select the right SQL instance in a SQL 2008 R2 upgrade

$

Sure hope someone can help with this one. I'm running an upgrade from SQL 2005 (Version 9.4.5000) to SQL 2008 R2 Standard. When I get to the screen to select the correct instance to upgrade I can't select the right instance. There are two instances listed. One is for our Sophos software (SQL 2008 SP2 Express Version 10.2.4000.0), which I want to ignore. The other is the instance with our actual databases on it (SQL 2005 Standard Version 9.4.5000). I can only select the Sophos instance, not the one I want to actually upgrade!

Any ideas why this would not be selectable? Is version 9.4.5000 outside of the upgrade capabilities of 2008 R2? Any way around this? Help!

Hi all,

I attempted to install a 2nd instance on the failover cluster but encounter the error below. So I thought I should have used the Standalone installation wizard instead. After the installation I realise the 2nd instance only exist on the 1st node so I attempt to remove the instance from "Add & Remove Program".

1) How do I remove the instance completely as I still see it on the 2nd screenshot.

2) How do I install a 2nd instance on a failover cluster SQL 2012 R2 ?

Error: "The SQL failover cluster instance name already exist"
