Optimal Locations for SQL 2005 TempDB & ReportServerTempDB MDF & LDF Files

$

Hello.  I have SQL Server 2005 SP4 installed on Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard SP2. The server has four CPU cores.  The server was configured with the following drive configuration.

               RAID 1 - System drive

RAID 5 - SQL MDF files

RAID 1 - SQL LDF files

There is currently one of each of the following files on the server. The MDF files are on the RAID 5 array, while the LDF files are on the RAID1 array for SQL LDF files.

               TempDB.mdf                                    ReportServerTempDB.mdf

               TempLog.ldf                                     ReportServerTempDB_log.ldf

It is my understanding that having one TempDB per core is a best practice, so I should create three more TempDB’s. Does that also apply to ReportServerTempDB?  Given the drive configuration of this server, where should all of the required MDF and LDF files for the TempDB’s and ReportServerTempDB’s be located?

Can you change toolbar button images in SQL Server 2012?

In SQL Server 2012 management studio I do not see an option to change the button image of the buttons on the toolbar.

In previous versions of SQL, you could go to Tools --> Customize --> Rearrange Commands, select the toolbar, click on a command and then click "Modify Selection". One of the resulting choices was "Change Button Image". You could choose a different image for the toolbar button you selected. Another choice was "Edit Button Image" which allowed you to create a completely new image for your toolbar button.

I do not see any way to do this in SQL Server 2012. Has this functionality been removed or am I just not finding it?

Thanks,

Alan

New server setup with Sequel Server

Hi there everyone,

We are wanting to setup a new server with sequel server 2012 and I wanted to know is sequel server the total platform or does it need windows server as well?  I am not that familiar with sequel server 2012  I also wanted to know if SQL server 2012 has an automatic backup setup available?  I know a little about SQL server 7 express which has a backup within it but has to be run manually each day except if you use another plugin which requires a lot of space which we don't have, another reason for a new server.

Thanks in advance

Virtual Processors and NUMA

We have an SQL 2014 virtualised server running on a Windows Server 2012 R2 failover cluster.

At present SQL has 1 virtual processor assigned to it.  Each host in our two host cluster has 2 sockets with 8 cores, giving 16 virtual processors.  In a nutshell how many virtual processors is it recommended to assign to SQL and from that point what are the recommendations for configuring NUMA?

We are a small research unit, not google, so our requirements are fairly modest.

I know this is a really generalistic question, but any "general" advice would be great.

Ian

Developer Version Compatibility

I need to support both SQL Server 2012 and 2014 environments (RDBMS, SSAS, SSIS, SSRS) and want to install developer edition on my PC. Do I need to install both versions?

Also, I've been to the Microsoft Store and see that Developer 2012 is out of stock. If I need it, where can I get it?

Thanks!

Slow multi-instance upgrade CU4 2014 (from CU3 2014)

I have 8 instances of 2014 Enterprise edition installed on a machine (clustered using AlwaysOn to two other machines).

When the upgrade runs across all instances it pauses for a very long period between each instance, displaying the message 'Closing the wizard'.

The database is already upgraded and can be queried.

What is the installer doing? Is there a workaround to speed it up?

non-yielding process issue on sql server 2005 sp2

Hi.

We ran into the non-yielding process issue on our sql server 2005 SP2 server this morning, and I was wondering if it would be best to upgrade in dev to sql server 2005 SP3 and then cumulative update 10 and 13, or upgrade to sql server 2005 sp4 and then cumulative update 2.

I'm leaning toward SP4, since it's got a lot of other fixes, and minimizes risk by having fewer updates, but would really appreciate confirmation about this, as well as details on upgrade steps, since the release notes don't go into details, such as whether we need to shutdown sql server first, or not.

I realize 2005 is very old, and we're planning on migrating the apps running on this server to our later versions, but there are hundreds of reports that need to be modified and/or tested first.

It's a pain that the books online weren't updated with SP4, and I didn't want to have any issues during the upgrade, or after.

I'd really appreciate any advice, etc. you have for me.

Upgrade SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008

Hi

I am an Oracle Apps DBA, I would be doing first time SQL Server DB upgrade from 2005 to 2008 version.

I have read around and found out that before upgrade I need to run below tool

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Upgrade Advisor

Mostly client is asking for inplace upgrade.  Can you please let me know if I need to take special precautions about this upgrade? The client has 12 nodes in DEV environment. In case I run into issues where do I look for in case of SQL Server.

I am referring to this document : http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlcat/archive/2008/12/08/ultimate-guide-to-upgrading-to-sql-server-2008.aspx

Please help

SQL Server 2012 SP2

Hi,

I have recently installed CU10 on SQL Server 2012. Now If I install SP2 which contains SP1 and CU9, does it rollback CU10? Is there any extra/known benefit which I can get by installing SP2 apart from the fixes it includes.

Please suggest what should I do?

Hi.

I have this error during installation SqlEngineConfigAction_install_confignonrc_Cpu64 (component of SQL 2014 CTP2) on virtual machine (Windows Server 2012 Standart). Logs in Event Viewer are clean. And I have no idea, what can I do with such problem. Maybe, you know and can help me?

Later in Event Viewer appears such message (maybe this message can help to resolve this problem):

SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3 compatibility with TFS 2012?

Hi all,

I have a client who is planning on upgrading from SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 to SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3 but wants to make sure that their installed Team Foundation Server 2012 databases will be ok?

I have found a Microsoft article saying that TFS 2012 support SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 but nothing about SP3.

Thanks for your help!

temdb - mdf and ldf files - are gone, plus model mdf and ldf files are gone...

Hello,

We had tempdb on separate drive, and all logs too (except master mdf and ldf, which are still accessible), however, I cannot open dialog on Microsoft SQL Server Managelent Studio. It tells me the following:

The log for database 'tempdb' is not available. Check the event log for related error messages. Resolve any errors and restart the database.

The drives mentioned above are permanently gone. At this point, I am looking at rebuilding the server from the scratch, likely, I have backups on another machine, however, I need to build new server with all files on one drive (C drive, versus before it was spread between different drives). The server that I am about to build will be our staging environment, so I do not care too much about the performance. How can I destroy whatever left over or salvage the existing one without having tempdb and model at first?

Ideally, I would like to drop any existing user dbs, add tempdb and model, and restore all other databases from backup. Any suggestion on how to do it properly?

Thank you very much!
