Install SQL Server 2012 (Developer) on Windows 8 error - OS does not fulfill requirements

Hello,

I have troubles installing SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition on Windows 8 Enterprise (RTM). At the very beginning of the installation process it reports "The operating system does not fulfill the requirements ...". I only know this message from other SQL Server editions but not from the developer edition.

Does anybody know a solution for this?

Many thanks, Reinhard

SQL Server 2008 SP3 (KB2546951) - Setup Problem

Hi,

I have tried to install this on our SQL Server 2008 SP2 Cluster and the first time it got to the stage where it started installing and then quit without any message. In the event logs it reported.

Application: setup100.exe
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Infrastructure.ChainerInfrastructureException
Stack:
   at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Infrastructure.LogProviderFile..ctor(System.String)
   at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.InitDetailedLog(Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Infrastructure.ServiceContainer, System.String)
   at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.InitializeLogProviders(Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Infrastructure.ServiceContainer)
   at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.Run()
   at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.Start()
   at Microsoft.SqlServer.Chainer.Setup.Setup.Main()

Now when ever I try to run the installation problem it displays the command box but then just disappears with no error message.

What is causing this problem and how do I solve this?

How I can setup SQL Server 2012Full after installing VS.net2010 SP1?

I installed VS.net2010 SP1 and Azure SDK and I would like to setup SQL Server 2012Full for SQL Server 2012 and SQL Azure Integration, but while installing SQL Server2012, It gave Error.

Moreover, another time, firstly I installed SQL Server 2012Full and then I installed VS.net2010 SP1, but when I run  VS.net2010 SP1 from start, it didn't work correctly and I think it's because VS.net2010 shell was installed by SQL Server 2012Full and they don't consistent with each other.

So, How I can setup both of (VS.net2010 SP1, Azure SDK) and (SQL Server 2012Full) on my system?

Siamak

Problems downloading a CU for SQL Server 2008 R2

Why can't I connect to my new cluster via ODBC but not through SSMS?

$

I have made several attempts to create a 2008 R2 failover cluster in my virtual environment. I can create the cluster, SQL validates the install, install SQL successfully and access the database via SSMS from the SQL server itself. I go to a another machine (virtual application server) and I can create a successful ODBC connection to the db. But when I try to connect from the app server to the db via SSMS with the cluster name I get the "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion..." error. When I try with the IP address assigned to the cluster I get "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible." "Named Pipes Provider, error: 40"

This a default instance and according to Configuration Manager it is using port 1433. Named Pipes and TCP/IP are enabled in Config Manager. The IP address of the cluster is listed in the IP addresses list in config manager. Remote access is allowed. Again I can connect via ODBC. So far this is a single node cluster as I'm trying to keep it simple until I can get it functional.

Any ideas anyone?

We are not able to start the installation of SQL server 2008 r2 on WS 2012 due to compatibility issues in the very beginning on the installation wizard .

Environment:WS2012 - 2Node cluster, with physical DC, Quorum disk(Vdisk) created on N1 and DTC role configured on the cluster, and allocated LUN(Vdisk) and added in the cluster storage for SQL server installation.

Also, we tried slipstream(SP1) installation on these node, still no luck. Please find the below error.

"None of the selected features can be installed" error on SQL 2005 Cluster

Hey All,

I installed SQL 2005 on a cluster.  Everything on the primary node works fine.  However, as the documentation suggests, the SQL Management Studio (and other tools) are not installed on the standby node by default.  However, when I go to try and install on the 2nd node I get the following error:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Setup
------------------------------

None of the selected features can be installed or upgraded. Setup cannot proceed since no effective change is being made to the machine. To continue, click Back and then select features to install. To exit SQL Server Setup, click Cancel.

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.1399.06&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=SQLSetup90&EvtType=28108

------------------------------

The link is referencing something about requiring a complex SA password.   I can verify that the directory structure on node 1 where the management studio and client tools exist does not exist on node 2.   I'm at wits end here, I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling/everything.

Anyone have any ideas?

thanks!

Need to Automate the Install of Management DataWarehouse thru scripts

Is there a reliable way to install the SQL Management Datawarehouse feature without using the "Configure Data Management Warehouse" Wizard from the SSMS UI?

I need an automated way to set this up, so that it works within a Continuous Intergration environment. ie: Looking for either Powershell or TSQL Scripts / Stored Procs.

I realise I can reverse engineer it to get the TSQL scripts, but am hoping that someone has documented it already.

Thanks

PS: It is it different between editions (2008R2 vs 2012) please add that insight too.

Shared feature and instance root disks in a cluster

Hi

We are installing a SQL Server 2008 R2 Active/Active cluster on W2K8 R2, with one instance on each of the two nodes (for now). Every node has a local C: and D: disk, while we have several SAN LUNS available for use within the SQL Server resource groups.

What are the recommended disks for installing the "instance root directories" and "shared feature folders" on? Should either of these be installed on shared SAN LUNS or are they supposed to be installed on the local disks of each node (i.e. D:)? Maybe both options are possible with their own advantages and drawbacks, considering the fact that multiple instances per node will soon be installed?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Cannot install SQL Server Express with Advanced Services, 2012 and 2008 versions

$

Hi all.  I have a weird bug when trying to install SQL Server 2012 Express with Advanced Services (same issue with 2008 with Advanced Services).  I can get past the initial extraction phase, but when the installer tries to run setup.exe after the extraction (I assume it is trying to run setup.exe?), a DOS window opens and then closes almost right after, and then the extraction directory and its contents are deleted.  When I use TaskManager to track the service, SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU_2012.exe*32 is running during the extraction phase but once it runs setup.exe and the DOS window opens and closes, SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU_2012.exe*32 disappears from the TaskManager.  I am running SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe (I'm using Windows 7, 64 bit) as downloaded from the Microsoft SQL Server Express 2012 site.  It's frustrating because I don't even get an error message from the installer on what the problem is.

To troubleshoot this, I have done the following:

1) I made a copy of the 2012 Advanced Services extraction directory so I could run setup.exe directly.  Unfortunately, when I run setup.exe, the DOS window opens and closes immediately and I get no error message.

2) I have tried to install SQL Server Express 2008 with Advanced Services (the file is also named SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe).  The same thing happens - extraction works but then the DOS window opens and closes after extraction and I get no error message.

3) I have even tried to install regular SQL Server Express 2012 (SQLEXPR_x64_ENU_2012.exe) but the same thing happens -  extraction works but then the DOS window opens and closes after extraction and I get no error message.

4) I have also tried the 32 bit version of 2012 Advanced Services (SQLEXPRADV_x86_ENU) but the same thing happens -  extraction works but then the DOS window opens and closes after extraction and I get no error message.

5) I have rebooted my computer and tried to install  SQL Server 2012 Advanced Services from scratch but that didn't work either.

6) I have tried to install SQL Server 2012 Advanced Services in safe mode (in case my anti-virus program - that is, Microsoft Security Essentials - was causing problems).  Same result - extraction works but setup.exe fails after opening and closing a DOS window.

All the above have been attempted with Administrator privileges (ie. right click on the exe and "Run as Administrator") so insufficient privileges shouldn't be the issue either.  I have no problems installing other programs (I've probably installed 15+ programs this year) so this is just a weird bug/quirk with SQL Server Express installer.

To top it off, I tried to look for a log file for the installation at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\ but I can't even find this directory.  My guess is this directory was never created because setup.exe fails immediately.  Also, I cannot find sqlsetup*.log in the %temp% directory.

FYI, my system is as follows:

Windows 7, Home Premium, Service Pack 1, 64 bit
SQL Server Express 2008 R2 already installed (without Advanced Services)
Microsoft Security Essentials

I have more than enough space on my hard drive so space shouldn't be an issue.  My only guess is that my earlier installation of SQL Server Express 2008 R2 (without Advanced Services) has done something that is affecting my current attempts at installation?

Help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

SQL 2012 License calculation

Hello Gys,

We have the following SQL 2012 license with SA (The below information are from Microsoft SA website)

SQL Server 2012 Enterprise 6
SQL Server 2012 Enterprise - 1 Processor 8
SQL Server 2012 Enterprise Core 12

I have taken a look of the license documents from Microsoft and all license will be changed to the Core license model. However, I still have the Processor license for SQL Server 2012. For the virtualization environment, how the SQL Server 2012 Enterprise - 1 Processor to handle the VMs?

Thanks,

SQL Server 2012 CU3 Install/Upgrade Error

Hi All,

Having an issue updating SQL Server 2012 RTM Standard  to CU3.

I'm getting the following error from the Detail log on each try:

"Error: Failed to run patch request for instance: MSSQLSERVER (exit code: -2061893565)"

I've tried rebooting the server, ensuring the user running the installer is a local admin account, ran the repair wizard on the SQL install...Nothing seems to work.

I have two identical servers, the first has gone smoothly, this is bugging me...

Any thoughts?

Windows 7 & SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools compatibility issue

$

My class requires that I use "murach's SQL Server 2008 for developers" as our course text and we have to download all of the required software onto our home computers to complete assignments. I run Windows 7 and the software needed is SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools. I cannot seem to find a version of this that is compatible with Windows 7 and still includes the SQL Server Management Studio Basic tool. Is there a way I can download this tool separately from the SQL Server 2008 SP3 I found, or can I just use SQL Server 2012? And does this SQL Server 2012 come bundled with this tool?

SQL Server 2008 R2 refuses automatic startup

$

Hey guys,

I have a VirtualBox Virtual Machine running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, SQL Server 2008 R2, SharePoint 2010 and some MS Office applications. Everything worked fine: After starting the VM, the SQL Server started automatically with SQL Server Agent, Analysis Services, Reporting Services etc. (as configured in the SQL Server Configuration Manager).

However, I recently installed Visual Studio 2010 Professional and since that moment, the SQL Server refuses to start automatically aftter the VM has been started. I checked the Configuration Manager - everything is still set to Automatic Startup. If I check the Windows Event Logs, there is a SharePoint Foundation Error 5586 - which is of course raised as the SQL Server instance isn't running. Services.msc show that both SQL Server and SQL Server Agent are set to Automatic Startup, but haven't been started.

Any guesses?

Upgrade SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise Eval (timed out) to MSDN SQL 2008 R2 Standard Edition

$

Hi all, hope someone out there can help as we need to get our development platform back up and running ASAP.  Our developers have installed SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise Evaluation which is running on one of our development servers.  The eval has timed out:

2012-09-18 11:20:22.58 Server      Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 (RTM) - 10.50.1617.0 (X64)
 Apr 22 2011 19:23:43
 Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation
Enterprise Evaluation Edition (64-bit) on Windows NT 6.1 <X64> (Build 7601: Service Pack 1) (Hypervisor)
2012-09-18 11:20:22.78 Server      SQL Server evaluation period has expired.

We have downloaded from our MSDN subscription the SQL 2008 R2 Standard edition.  We wish to replace/upgrade the eval with the MSDN subscription version.  Is there any way of doing this without a complete uninstall/reinstall.  I have read that we can replace the PID by locating the key on the Media from MSDN however when I try to do that and install using the Installation centre it says the product key is not valid.

Does anyone have any idea how we can do this without risk of losing data.  Unfortunately I am not a SQL expert but am willing to follow instructions and take any help offered.

Thanks in advance.

Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit. SQL 2008 R2 64bit.

The Windows Failover cluster is installed with 2 nodes. SQL Cluster was installed successfully on node 1. Ran SQL setup to add a SQL node 2. Made it to the service accounts screen. The SQL Server Agent service account name box is grayed out and nothing can be entered. If I hit next I get the following error. I can't get past this. I looked for any cumulitive updates for R2, but there aren't any. Does anyone have a work around? If not I will have to scrap the install and go back to the non R2 version of SQL.
