Tempdb Resize - What Caused It?

Hello,

I'm hoping this is the right group to post this question.

Does anyone know under what circumstances would cause the tempdb to shrink by itself?  Is this even possible?  I know it can grow automatically.  We recently had a situation like this but I'm not able to figure out why.  It went from 5GB allocated disk space to 1GB.
