SQL 2016 SP2CU2 - Cannot add new features "Client Tools SDK" & "Client Tools Backwards Compatibility"

Hi,

I have an install/config issue with one of my dev servers. It was running SQL2016 SP2 and I successfully applied CU2 when it came out a few days back.

Now I need to add some additional components (Namely "Client Tools SDK" & "Client Tools Backwards Compatibility" ) but get the following error when I try (using SQL2016 SP2 install media) :

Action required:
Use the following information to resolve the error, and then try the setup process again.

Feature failure reason:
An error occurred for a dependency of the feature causing the setup process for the feature to fail.

Product Update:
Product Update has successfully applied KB 4052908 <http://support.microsoft.com/?id=4052908>. These updates have set the patch level of the Setup operation to 13.2.5026.0.

Things I have tried unsuccessfully:

  • Slipstream the CU2 using the commandline "setup.exe /Action=Install /UPDATESOURCE=D:\CU2"   - installer complains that no updates are found in D:\CU2
  • Uninstalling CU2 - error saying that multiple components of SQL2016 are installed.
  • Repairing using the SQL2016SP2 install media, then trying again to add the components.

Any ideas what else I can do to get this to work?

Thanks in advance,

Tallal Garghouti
