We created an alias to another SQL Server and configured it with the correct port number. On 2005, I just referenced the alias name and created the linked server and it worked great and now we don't have to change code if the server changes (where that
has already happened twice recently)
But we are migrating off 2005 (finally got the hardware and license) and did the same thing as above on the 2014 server and it's not working. It's not finding the server at all.
I set up the linked server using the full name and port and that linked server works.
What are we missing?
