installation repair

Hi all,

I have upgraded some of our SQL2008 enterprise servers from SQL 2014.

Everything seems to be working reasonably well but I discovered an issue with trying to use debug in SSMS.

Was getting the same error, namely 'failed to start debugger. Data is null. The method or property cannot be coded on Null value'.

One of the servers was my test server, so I played with various things to try and fix it, tried uninstalling/reinstalling the tools, tried the SQL 2016 tools - no joy.

What finally fixed it was running the 'repair' option from the installation media.

But there seems to be little documentation or advice as to what this does, and I'm wary of running this on a production server without knowing what the risks could be.   Has anyone any experience/info on this option and whether it can cause more harm that good.  Is is advisable to get well backed up before running it ?

Thanks

PD
