SQL on SharePoint using 98 percent CPU

Hello.

First I am going to say up front that our SharePoint environment has SQL is on a virtual server. I know this is strongly discouraged but it's what they have done.

I'd like to know if the issue we are seeing is as a result of this being on a virtual server or if it there is something else that we can check or configure to alleviate the issue below.

We have two SharePoint 2010 environments, PRD A and PRD B. PRD B is going to replace PRD A. PRD A is actively used right now and PRD B has no one as we wait for a switch over date. Each environment has their own separate SQL cluster on virtual servers. For some reason PRD B, the database servers CPU is at 98% utilization. It will drop for a few minutes then it is back up at 98 - 99 percent. It will stay like that for (I'm guessing) about 30 minutes or so and drop again for a few minutes. I have looked at the resource utilization and it shows SQL server as the main use.

Meanwhile, PRD A, has no problem in this area and that is the one actively serving our users. We aren't running anything in PRD B,except ControlPoint and DocAve run in the background. These two are not on PRD A.

Our DBAs are kind of stumped. Does anyone have an idea what we can look at to see what SQL is doing that would cause the CPU to run this high.

Thanks
