2012 setup bombs after disk swap - how to recover?

I am updating SQL 2008R2 Dev edition on a Win 7 Pro SP1 machine.  Setup is running from a disk in the optical drive.  During the install phase (about 1/3 based on the progress bar), setup said it needed the VS 2010 Premium -EN disk.  I removed the SQL Server disk and loaded the VS 2010 disk.  Setup copied some files.  Then, I started getting more messages:

  1. Setup failed to launch .NET Framework 4,0.  error code 2
  2. Required package F:\long path\SQLWriter.msi doesn't exist.  error 0x84B20001
  3. SQL Server has stopped working.  Sending report to MS...

It seems that setup forgot to ask for the SQL Server setup disk!  Unbelievable.  Hopefully this will make its way to the team and it can be corrected.

Meanwhilst, I am curious about the best path to recover.  SQL Server 2008R2 seems to be intact.  Can I simply try running the install again (this time mounting an ISO of the VS 2010 disk!).  Should I uninstall SQL Server 2008R2, wipe out all of the related folders and registry entries and do a fresh 2012 install?  The first computer I updated (with what I thought was an identical configuration) did not need the VS disk and setup was a smooth experience.

Best,

Scott
