I am trying to install MS SQL Server Developer 2012 on a Lenovo T410i 2516 laptop running Windows 7 x64 Professional. I am running from the DVD and when I click on setup.exe running as Administrator, it asks "Do you want to allow this program to make changes to the computer?" and I select "Yes". From that point on, it halts after popping up an MSDOS window for a fraction of a second. It creates no SQL Server log files nor subdirectories, it leaves no messages, it gives not the slightest hint as to what the problem is.
I have uninstalled Visual Studio C++ (2005, 2008 and 2010) and Basic. I have also uninstalled an earlier .Net Framework and enabled it in Windows 7. I've since tried reinstalling it and find that I cannot (perhaps because it's enabled). I have tried turning off the Virus protection, which is MS Security Essentials with no effect.
Note that I have 60GB free disk space, 8GB RAM and a 2.4GHz i3 processor on the laptop.
I would prefer to not reinstall Windows 7 and all my applications from scratch as that would be a large amount of extra work.
