Database Mail installation, usage requirements??

0
0

I have been told that Database Mail in SQL Server 2012 (I don't know anything yet about 2014) on Windows Server 2012 R2 (Update 1 presumably) now requires installing the Desktop Experiencefeature on the Windows 2012 R2 server containing SQL Server 2012.

I was further told that SQL Server Database Mail now requires one file that is included by installing the Desktop Experience feature...!!

I'm sure this was/is not an issue with Windows Server 2008 R2 and earlier.

Is this all TRUE??

Would someone(s) please clarify??

Thank you, Tom

SQL Server access to MDB databases slow

We had a stored procedure with one section that populates a single variable in the SP from a query to a MSAccess database MDB file via a linked server. It was running from SQL Server MSDE 2000 and it was fast on an XP system.

We transferred to a SQL Server 2012 database on a 32bit Win 7 machine and the same SP will time out before returning a simple result.  Code calls a SP and within that SP is a call to another SP where it shows the timeout error message.  I can run the exact same SP in SSMS on a Win 7 box hitting the very database where the error occurs during the program code execution and it returns results in less than one second.

I've heard folks talk about this being a known problem.  Does anyone have a workaround to resolve this issue?

TIA

Unable to install SQL Server 2012 Developer

I have a problem with installing SQL Server 2012 (no matter which edition I choose). Installation usually runs well, but near the end shows up an error:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 1 Setup
------------------------------

The following error has occurred:

Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed. Check the SQL Server error log for potential causes.

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft%20SQL%20Server&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=50000&ProdVer=11.0.3128.0&EvtType=0xD15B4EB2%25400x4BDAF9BA%25401306%254026

------------------------------
BUTTONS:

OK
------------------------------

The help link points to not-existing article on MSDN page. After I click OK button, the installation reaches it's end and shows up another, which tells, that Database Engine Services, Reporting Services - Native, Data Quality Services, Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search and SQL Server Replication failed to install.

After that I am able to start, for example SQL Management Studio, but cannot connect to database. Also services of SQL Server (Server, Server Agent, Full-text Filter, Reporting Services) are stopped and I am not able to start them manually (any try throws an error: "The request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion. Consult the event log or other applicable error logs for details").

I tried complete reinstalling of SQL Server, cleaning registry entries, different editions of that software - none method helped. Also, I tried the .iso images of installation media on other computers - it worked well and installed without any errors. My OS is Windows 8.1 x64.

Can't failover SQL node after applying 2008 R2 SP1

I have a 2 node SQL 2008 R2 cluster hosting SharePoint 2010. The environment is not full production yet.  Everything is working properly, nodes can fail back and forth without issue.

I applied SP1 to the passive node, then tried to failover to that node, but I get "Error Code: 0x080071398 - The operation failed because either the specified cluster node is not the owner of the group, or the node is not a possible owner of the group"

I double check the resources to make sure that node 1 was still a possible owner and it is.  Since the farm is not live yet I decided to apply SP1 to the active node and let the resources go offline for the patch.  The SP1 install did not have any errors and was successfully applied.  However, I still can not fail over the SQL instance to node 1.

I have been able to failover the DTC resource to node 1 and 2 before and after the SP1 install without issue.

Any ideas?

SQL Server Express 2014 on Win8.1: Could not find the Database Engine startup handle

Hello,

I tried to follow all the similarly titled posts in this forum, yet no solution seems to work, so I hope I can find some up-to-date suggestion here (most of the older posts refer to versions from 2008 to 2012...).

I have installed Visual Studio 2013 (with the latest Update 2 RC) on a freshly installed development workstation with Win 8.1 with all its updates. Now I'd want to install SQL Server 2014 Express, but the setup keeps failing with the dreaded "Could not find the Database Engine startup handle" error (the log follows below).

What I tried:

1) download again and repair. Same error.

2) completely uninstall by launching setup.exe /Action=uninstall (success), then rebooting the OS, then installing again. Same error. I did this twice, the second time I also manually removed any directory left out in C:\Program Files etc.

When I launch the setup, I select all the components for installation in the package SQLEXPRADV_x64_ENU.exe (1.12 GB, last downloaded today -Apr 3, 2014-), and accept all the defaults including the proposed services accounts. There is no preexisting SQL Server instance, as expected.

The setup takes its time, and finally fails with the error quoted above. I really do not want to reformat my HD and fully reconfigure my workstation, which took about 3 days... Could anyone suggest a solution to have SQL Server 2014 setup so I can start developing instead of wasting time in administering the system?

Thanks to all! The log follows.

I’m facing DTC issues using SQL Link Servers, but first, I’ve got a couple of questions.

1)  Is it in any way possible to use DTC authentication across two individual workgroup machines (both SQL servers being in a workgroup or one being in a workgroup)?
2)  If yes, which credentials is it using (can i specify credentials)? If not, am I only left with the “no authentication” option?
3)  In general, authentication or not, is the flow to the linked server encrypted? Meaning, if I run a DTC query across a Linked Server (over the WAN), are the results sent back in plain text?
4)  Is it possible to configure DTC to only listen on a specific interface/IP (much likes the ServerTcpPort value to specify a port)
5)Im vaguely familiar with SQL, im just trying to get the network side to work. Besides Linked Servers and DTC (whatever its reason is), are there any other options I can pass along to the SQL folks?

So I have a multi-homed SQL 2012 box with a public and private interface. I can perform a DTC query on the private Lan, but I can’t connect to it (run a DTC query) on the public IP, or to the private IP when coming across a VPN connections. Im getting a 7391 error. I verified the following:

-DTC is set to No Authentication on all ends.
-Its not a DTC configuration issues or I wouldn’t be able to perform the DTC query even across the private Lan.
-Its not a firewall issue. In fact, from an IP perspective, I can verify (netstat) that it is indeed establishing a connection to DTC. I have configured DTC to use a static port.
-I configured the firewall to allow any/any for the remote SQL server. In fact, I -for testing purposes- even disabled the firewall all together. Likewise, when establishing a VPN connection (PPTP), im completely not firewalled and connect to the private IP.
-I confirmed on all ends that the NetworkService users has full access to C:\Windows\System32\Msdtc\MSDTC.Log.
-Im getting a success message when testing the LinkServer connection.
-I have no issues performing a regular query (select from LinkSrvrName.DBName.dbo.Table), it only failed when using “BEGIN DISTRIBUTED TRANSACTION”
-I set the "TurnOffRpcSecurity" reg value to 1
-I ran "SET XACT_ABORT ON"

Im getting the following error message:
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server "ServerName" returned message "No transaction is active.".
Msg 7391, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
The operation could not be performed because OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI10" for linked server " ServerName " was unable to begin a distributed transaction.

Is there a way to get the same kind of listing that can be obtained from the "Installed SQL Server Features Discovery Report" in the SQL setup wizard, but on a remote computer\server?  Inclusive SQL 2005\2008\R2\2012.

TCP/IP properties

I have a questions about TCP/IP configurations for SQL server 2008R2.  We have several instances on one machine (same IP) and some of the instances have the IP1 (under the IP addresses tab) enabled set to yes and have dynamic port values of 0 because we are using dynamic ports.  Should this "enabled" be set to yes on all the instances because we are using a static IP address for the server?

We are not having any connection issues, I was just wondering what is the best practice on the TCP/IP settings.

Thanks.

I am now wondering if there is a download link for SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer edition with SP2 included (i.e. not just SP2 but the whole application (5GB+) otherwise I am not sure how to install this.

Error during SQL Server 2008 R2 setup regarding BIDS

Hi,

until two days ago, I worked with SQL Server 2008 R2 and related BIDS installation without any problems. Now, when I run BIDS 2008 R2 I've an error about one or more missing components and the error message suggests to reinstall the application. I've tried more times to remove and reinstall before the all SQL Server client objects, included BIDS, and then also the entire SQL Server setup. The error is changed: "Upgrade Failed due to the following Error. The error code is: -2147467259. Message: error not specified." BIDS 2008 R2 is the only component that cannot be installed.

I'm working on my machine having Windows 7 64-bit and .NET Framework vers. 4.5.1.

After more attempts, I'd like to have any helps/suggests to solve this issue, please.

Many thanks!!!

P.S.: Likely inside the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0 folder any objects could be missing or corrupted. Is it possible to repair this specific path with a separate setup file from SQL Server setup?

Hi,

We are trying to install SQL 2008 R2 bids on a build server that has sql 2005 bids, vs 2008, vs 2010 on a  Windows 2003 Server. It fails. The first "error:" we find in the log is this :

MsiGetProductInfo failed to retrieve ProductVersion for package during install

I keep getting this when trying to install SQL Server 2008 Workstation Components on a Vista Premium PC that has SQL Server 2005 tools on it.

MsiGetProductInfo failed to retrieve ProductVersion for package with Product Code = '{2243F21A-E132-44F7-BA13-024D0845C815}'. Error code: 1605.

I have tried all kinds of cleanup of the 2005 version to no avail (Uninstall, MS Install Cleanup Utility, Registry cleanup, Old SQL Server directory deletes, etc... ).

Wipe PC and start over is not an option.

Any suggestions?  What the heck is it looking for?

I have reinstalled my SQL Server 2005 tools and have no mention of '
2243F21A-E132-44F7-BA13-024D0845C815' in my registry, but 2008 tools still do not want to install.

Failure to install SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU8/9 with a “Failed to retrieve data for this request.” error

Hi all,
Has anyone come across SQL Server 2012 SP1 CU8/9 failing to install with a “Failed to retrieve data for this request.” error.
The error is too generic for a useful search on web, for me at least anyway.
Had no problems patching a whole bunch of other servers in the same environment.
I’m no good at reading these error logs. For some reason the primary replica is referenced in the detailed log???
The CU8/9 patch has been run by both Domain Admins and local Admin with no luck.
We are trying to patch a secondary failover replica. (SharePoint 2013 is installed on this server.)

This is from the summary log:

How to get licence of MSDN sqlserver 2008 r2 setup installation

Hi ,

I installed sql server 2008 R2  which I downloaded from MSDN.

At MSDN there was no key given. So I thought that this will run for ever and installed SharePoint 2010 on it.

After few months the sharepoint sites did not load saying the sql server period has expired.

How do I  make SQl server 2008 R2 run. MSDN download page says no key required.

Regards

Vinod

What next after downloading SQLEXPR_x64_ENU (MS SQL Server 2008 R2)

Hi,

After installing SQLEXPR_x64_ENU (122mb - MS SQL Server 2008 R2), I get to see

  1. Import and Export Data (64-bit)
  2. Complete SQL Server 2008 R2 Installation
  3. SQL Server Configuration Manager
  4. SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting and
  5. SQL Server Installation Center (64-bit).

Do we have to download the SQL server management studio separately?

What else is required for me to start with querying the database like (select * from table;)

Do we get any sample DB along with the installation as in oracle or do we need to create our own DB?

Best Regards,

Shyam

We're going to upgrade our SQL server from 2012 to 2014 in a couple weeks. Are we ok to leave our SSRS Server running 2012 for a week or two, or do we need to upgrade it to 2014 at the same time?  If it's ok to leave SSRS at 2012, is there anything special we need to do once SQL is upgraded to 2014?  They are on different physical servers.

Thanks in advance.
