SQL Server upgrade to 2008R2

$

Hi,

We are trying to upgrade SQL Server from 2005 SP /Developer 64-bit to 2008R2 /Developer 64-bit. At the last step before starting installation I get an error "Feature upgrade failed". Looking into this error, it seems that this occurs when trying to upgrade developer --> standard/enterprise OR 32-->64 bit but this is not the case for us.

The DVD that we are using is burnt from the file: en_sql_server_2008_r2_developer_x86_x64_ia64_dvd_522665.iso From Download area for my MSDN subscription. This DVD was used on a test machine to upgrade developer-->developer successfully... When given the option, I can't choose between enterprise and developer and can only choose between free (express, etc.) and other edition. So I choose the other option and a key is detected coming from DefaultSetup.ini:
;SQLSERVER2008 Configuration File
[SQLSERVER2008]
PID="GYFXX-XXXX..."

Any ideas where to look and what to look for? One hint is that the license agreement is titled "SQL Server 2008R2 enterprise" but this might simply be for the license agreement...

Thanks a lot for your assistance!

SQL 2008 Instance not listening on port

Windows 2008 R2 Standard 64 Bit Server SQL 2008 R2 Standard 64 bit

I have three SQL instances running on my server

Instance 1 myswlserver port 1433

Instance 2 Sharepoint port 50135

Instance 3 Production port 49477

Instance 1 and 2 both are listening on ipv4

Instance 3 is not it is only listening on ipv6 I do not use IPV6 yet.

In SSCM I defined static port for both Instance 2 and 3

I am having a problem connnecting to instance 3 from a web site that uses ASP code with a connect string. Been fighting with this for several days.

Then just looked again at my logs and found that instance 3 is not listening on IPV4

My firewall is configured for the ports udp and tcp allowing access both ways also port 1434 is open both ways.

So why is instance 3 only listening on IPV6?

Any ideas on why?

Thanks

Tom

Is there an upgrade roadmap from SSRS 2008 Service pack 3 to SSRS 2012?

$

There is an upgrade path from SSRS 2008 Service Pack 2 to SSRS 2012 documented on the MSDN.

However, I cannot find any similar documentation to say if the same will work if Service Pack 3 is installed.

Does anyone know if it's Service Pack 2 or above or is there a different upgrade path from Service Pack 3?

Rule "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is required" failed.-> SSMS Express 2012 on Windows 7

I'm trying to install SQL Server Management Studio Express 2012 on my Windows 7.  I have Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 Client Profile, Extended and Multi-targeting Pack on my machine.

I also have had Visual Studio Professional Edition recently installed if that makes any difference.

The install for SSMS is failling on the installation rules screen at:

---------------------------
Rule Check Result
---------------------------
Rule "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is required" failed.

This computer does not have the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 installed. If the operating system is Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, download and install Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=22. If the operating system is Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, enable the .NET Framework 3.5 feature. A computer restart may be required after installing.
---------------------------

Taking a hint from the error message,  I went to Turn Features On and Off,  but I saw only Windows Communication Foundation HTTP Activation

and

Windows Communication Foundation Non-HTTP Activation

under microsoft NET Framework 3.5.1.  So I checked those boxes and restarted. No help.

One possible other guess from this thread:

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqldensetup/thread/c06365c5-ce96-4fc8-a12b-6c123c39044c/

is that I may need to "enable the application role (including .NET 3.5) through the OS"?

How would I do that on a Windows 7?

Or if there are other solutions, please let me know.

Thanks!

find RAM and HDD capacity

Hello Every One,

How to find the Actual installed RAM on the server in GB (ex:16GB/32GB/64GB) and the total capacity of the installed Hard Disk capacity and Total free space on the server in GB (Ex: 1024 GB etc). I don't need the size for individual partitions, I am looking at the overall capacity of the HDD.

I have over 25 Servers and I need to know the same on all of them. Is there any easiest way?

Thanks in Advance

SQL 2008 R2 Standard 64 bit on Windows 2008 R2 Standard 64 bit

Using SSCM to define the protocols for my sql instances. I have three sql instances

1. Mysqlserver    port 1433
2. Sharepoint      port 50135
3. Production      port 2433

My question is about defining the tcp/ip parameters.

I want to use static ports for all three instances.

Now the IP# is not the same in all three instances. Should they be the same except for the port number?

See how they start up different?

The Sharepoint and Production iinstances had dynamic ports and I changed them to statis and added those ports to my firewall inbound rules.

Should I model the Sharepoint and Production instances like the mysqlserver instance?

I am leaning toward that but need the experts opionon

Thanks

Domain, local group, or SID account

Hi,

I need advice on how to correctly apply permissions to a SQL Server instance.  Does this sound correct?

1) Apply local permissions to the local group (e.g., SQLServerMSSQLUser$compername$instance) when possible.

2) Apply other local permissions to the service SID (e.g., NT SERVICE\MSSQL$instance).

3) Apply domain level permissions (e.g., remote servers and active directory) to the domain service account.

Is a service SID ever used when setting permissions in AD?

We had a SQL Server failing to use NTLM or Kerberos.  The SPNs were wrong.  (No idea how that happened.)  We fixed them manually.  We granted the domain service account the rights to handle the SPN.  (Not tested yet.)  I'm not an AD person, so I don't know what account is really correct to use in this case.

I also noticed that the service SID value for the SQL service is the same across machines if they have the same instance name.  I suppose that if this SID could be used in AD, then it would apply to all servers with that instance name?

Is there an easy way to test if the all the permissions are in place?  Our group policy is customized in the OU for SQL Servers so that the local group rights installed by SQL are not removed.  (Policy might be okay most of the time, but that does not mean it's been okay all of the time or the machine was not in the wrong OU at some point since the SQL install.)

Can group policy remove rights from a service SID in the same way as other accounts?

Thanks

SQL SERVER 2012 Client tools installation Fails due to leftover Clsid registry key

Hello,

I am preparing silent deployment of SQL Server 2012 Client tools, so got everything ready in place, i am installing the below component.

My problem is that Installation Run perfect first time on any particular machine, but when i uninstall and try to install again(Second time) on that same machine, the installations fails to installs several components citing cannot write to class registry.

when i check the log it point to class\clsid\{some-guid-here}\inprocserver32\11.0.0.0

when i check in regedit the registry hives is created upto class\clsid\{some-guid-here}\inprocserver32\  is completely blank,

so now if i delete the registry mention in log and try the installation again, it fails again, now pointing to some other clsid\{guid}, if i delete that and  try again, it again fail, pointing to new guid registry

it keeps going on and on,

looks like on clean machine, it Install perfect first time, but on that same machine, if you try to uninstall and install again (second time), it keep failing, due to leftover registry from previous installation.

please help.

SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio install fails telling me to install Visual Studio 2008 SP1!

Hi,

I am getting the following error when trying to install SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio (SQLManagementStudio_x86_ENU.exe or SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe) on a new Toshiba Portege R830-10R:

Another version of Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 has been detected on this system that must be updated to SP1.  Please update all Visual Studio 2008 installations to SP1 level, by visiting Microsoft Update.

I have all Windows Updates installed on this machine and I DO NOT have VS 2008 installed on this computer (VS2008 was never installed on this computer), but VS 2010 SP1 with .Net Framework 4.0 SP1!

I have sent all day trying to install either ones of the above .exe, but always get the same error message.

I have checked the registry and see that I do not have a  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VS key but only a HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VC key (probably since I configured VS1010 for C#).  The HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DevDiv\VC\Servicing\9.0 contains SP = 1 and SPIndex = 1.

Please help.
Thanks.

SQL Server 2012 Upgrade from 2008 R2 Failure - "The name has already been shared"

I've just attempted to upgrade my 2008 R2 installation to 2012 and 3 components failed to installed during the upgrade: Database Engine Services, Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search and Reporting Services. When I look at the failure details for Database Engine Services it shows error code -2147467259 and the message "The name has already been shared".

Any advice on next steps would be much appreciated.

Upgrade Advisor Error

Hello all,

I am planning to upgrade an existing SQL 2008 Standard to SQL 2008 R2 Standard and I'm getting the following error when using the upgrade advisor to check the existing integration service:

"Upgrade Advisor cannot locate the SQL Server 2005 Integration Services files that it requires to analyze packages.
The installation of Integration Services on this computer has already been upgraded to SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2.
To upgrade existing Integration Services 2005 packages without analyzing them, use the SSIS Package Upgrade Wizard.
If you have upgraded from SQL Server 2008 to SQL Server 2008 R2, you do not have to upgrade your packages."

Does this error indicate that we have some SQL 2005 SSIS packages in the server which haven't been upgraded to 2008?

Please provide your thoughts.

Thanks.

SQL Server 2012 HOL Client system requirements??

WE have some ready-to-use HOL Lab setups, that we have put on our servers.

Now we want my inhouse users to access these HOL labs to gain some experience/handson about SQL Server 2012.

Is there any minimum system requirements required to run such HOLs?

SQL Express 2008 Change TCP Port using Configurationfile.ini

$

Hi,

I'm trying to build a configurationfile.ini for use in installing SQL Express 2008 R2 SP1 on around 200 servers.  All servers will be the same so I only need one file.  I've created 99% of the file and it works without any problems at all.  The only issue I have is that our existing servers (Server 2000) all run SQL on a different port to standard. THe SQL 2000 install uses an .iss file which has the parameter "TCPPORT=" configured but unfortunately this doesn't seem to work using 2008.

Is it possible to set the TCPIP ports using a configurationfile.ini switch?  I know how to change it manually but would like to get it all done in one installation without using something like an AutoIT script at the end.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

SQL Server 2008 cluster install - Agent not added as resource.

Hi,

I have installed SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1 on a cluster. The installed completed without issue. However, I have noticed that the agent was not created as a resource on the cluster.

I have check the "SQL Server Agent not listed as cluster resource" post (I cannot post links), but the sqagtres.dll exists and regedit entries are 1.

Question, why was the agent not created?

Thanks

Joe

Error installing SQL Server 2012 Express with Advanced Tools (x64)

I'm installing SQL Server 2012 Express with Advanced Tools in Windows Server 2008 R2. When the installation check the prerequisites for installing, it fails when detecting the Internet connection for downloading .Net Framework 4.

I'm doing the installation offline, but the problem is that in the installation instructions, it's said that the .Net Framework 4 package doesn't come with the SQL Server setup file, and you need to have an internet connection for the setup to download the required files OR to install it previously to the installation.

I've checked that the .Net Framework 4 is installed and that also the .Net Framework 3.5 is enable. I've even checked that it's correctly deployed with the Net FrameWork Setup Verification Tool (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2008/10/13/8999004.aspx), and no problem is found.

Anyone has a clue of what's happening here?

Cheers,

Akuma.

KB955706 failed to install on Microsoft SQL Server 2005

I downloaded and installed Service Pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server 2005.  During the completion of the installation, there was a Hotfix.exe error that said "A recently applied update, KB955706, failed to install.  Also, a message pops up to reboot the computer.  Does this mean that the Service Pack 3 installation was unsuccessful?  How do I fix this?
